Publisher's Summary

The riveting story of the history-making mission to reach the bottom of all five of the world’s oceans - the ultimate frontier of our planet.

Humankind has explored every continent on earth, climbed its tallest mountains, and gone into space. But the largest areas of our planet remain a mystery: the deep oceans. At over 36,000 feet deep, these areas closest to earth’s core have remained nearly impossible to reach - until now.

Technological innovations, engineering breakthroughs and the derring-do of a unique team of engineers and scientists, led by explorer Victor Vescovo, brought together an audacious global quest to dive to the deepest points of all five oceans for the first time in history.

Expedition Deep Ocean reveals the marvelous and other-worldly life found in the ocean’s five deepest trenches, including several new species that have posed as of yet unanswered questions about survival and migration between oceans. Then there are the newly discovered sea mounts that cause tsunamis when they are broken by shifting tectonic plates and jammed back into the earth’s crust, something that can now be studied to predict future disasters.

Filled with high drama, adventure and the thrill of discovery, Expedition Deep Ocean celebrates courage and ingenuity and reveals the majesty and importance of the deep ocean.

Fantastic Story!

What an amazing real life adventure. So we’ll told, and very honest in its approach. One of the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to. This story truly makes one wonder what else mankind can accomplish in the future. Kiddos to all involved!

Good lesson for project managers

Good explication of the problems facing engineering projects. I’m not sure what the Takeaway is but t it was certainly an interesting read. There were a couple of technical mistakes but that is to be expected when non-technical people write about engineering projects. For instance, talking about the increase in speed after installation of a sonar dome on the bow of the test boat, the narrator states that it was due to some sort of “Bernoulli effect.“ In fact, the drag reduction of a bow sonar bulb comes from a reduction in wave resistance.

INFOMERCIAL NOT HISTORY

If you’re interested in the story wait for the Discovery Channel/Nat Geo Special. Book is written to promote the resale of the submersible and support ship and reads as such. Victor Vascovo is successful but lacks humility and is insecure if he approved this book. It constantly reminds you of his wealth and success. It’s a shame, because it could have been an ingesting story. Instead it’s 10 hours of “the most interesting man in the world” who just happens to have time in his busy schedule to pay for and oversee the building of a bespoke submersible to go to the bottom of the 5 oceans. “Whatever shall we do this afternoon?” Save your time and money.

Absolutely captivating!

I love the Ocean and this was truly an adventure!
I look forward to where they explore next, and to watching the program of this amazing feat when it is released :)

Exciting tale of failing, fixing and success

Riveting story of how the expedition unfolded based on one man’s dream. Ok, he’s a rich man, but we need people like Vescovo with vision, daring and initiative to explore our planet!

floored and flawed

Admire the effort it took for the dives to be completed but a poor performance with bad accents by the narrator and watch adverts rather than details during the deepest dive somewhat took the joy out of the listen

Ok this is a fantastic achievement.

But sadly I think the author failed to capture the breathtaking achievements, perhaps in his national character its normal to constantly gripe about the pitfalls of the testing and development phase of an exceptional vehicle and its team.
To all involved in this endeavour I salute you.

Interesting, and informative

Really well paced, and it had facts and cool information aplenty. Heard how hard this challenge is to achieve, but interesting on how the feat was achieved !!!! Well read and great take on the story

Not what I thought, but good

If you're hoping this book delves into the science and discovery of these dives, then prepare to be disappointed. This is the story of the expedition behind the scenes, just about everything except details of the dives themselves. It was initially frustrating, but transpires to be a great story. Would recommend.
