Arthur Schnitzler è uno scrittore conosciuto soprattutto per una nuova modalità di scrittura definita monologo interiore, attraverso la quale faceva parlare i suoi personaggi. Molto apprezzato da Freud, che riconosceva in lui intuizioni che a lui erano costate anni di studio.“Fuga nelle tenebre” fu completato nel 1917, ma pubblicato solo nel 1931, anno della morte di Schnitler, e tre anni dopo il suicidio della figlia, da cui lo scrittore non si riprese.
