Publisher's Summary

From the internationally best-selling author of the Artemis Fowl series: Eoin Colfer's first adult fantasy novel is a hilarious, high-octane adventure about a vodka-drinking, Flashdance-loving dragon who's been hiding out from the world - and potential torch-carrying mobs - in a Louisiana bayou...until his peaceful world's turned upside down by a well-intentioned but wild Cajun tearaway and the crooked (and heavily armed) law officer who wants him dead.

Squib Moreau may be swamp-wild, but his intentions are (generally) good: he really wants to be a supportive son to his hard-working momma Elodie. But sometimes life gets in the way - like when Fake Daddy walked out on them leaving a ton of debt, or when crooked Constable Regence Hooke got to thinking pretty Elodie Moreau was just the gal for him....

An apprenticeship with the local moonshine runner, servicing the bayou, looks like the only way to pay off the family debts and maybe get Squib and his momma a place in town, far from Constable Hooke's unwanted courtship and Fake Daddy's reputation.

Unfortunately for Squib, Hooke has his own eye on that very same stretch of bayou - and neither of them have taken into account the fire-breathing dragon hiding out in the Louisiana swamp...

For Squib Moreau, Regence Hooke and Vern, aka Lord Highfire of Highfire Eyrie, life is never going to be the same again.

Highfire: A triumphant genre-bending tour de force of comedy and action by the million-copy-selling master storyteller.

Adult /= sweary

Very disappointed. I loved Eoin Colfer's books as a child and now read them with my own children. I got about 5 minutes into this one and gave up. Just because it's a book for adults doesn't mean it needs to be full of swearing. I don't want to listen to that and Colfer is such a great writer, he doesn't need it.

hard to get into, but a solid story once you do

I found it initially a bit confusing to follow and so was a bit disengaged, but as it progressed I found I enjoyed it more and more.

Delightful

What a delightful tale. Funny, hysterical in places, suspenseful in others, just a well-rounded story.

Perfect Narrator!

A great story. Unusual, full of suspence and character. I really enjoyed it.
Johnny Heller's narration dropped me straight into the location. He was absolutely perfect! Between him and the brilliant writing I could almost smell the bayou.

Another great story from Colfer

the narrators accent took a few chapters to get into but it worked, so stick with it. Great writing from Colfer as usual but this ain't no kids book so be aware. Strong language and sexual references make this a very funny adult book. well done Eoin a great transition and it comes highly recommended.

Eoin has done it again !!

Wow. Defo an adult only book. Funny, gripping, fast paced. Narrator a bit hard going at first, but persevere and it’ll all make sense. I loved it and listened to it all in a day, while doing the housework and cooking Sunday lunch. Pity there isn’t a sequel .........

Highclass

A really great listening experience. The reader’s ability to bring a range of potentially unbelievable characters to life is impressive. Plenty of humour and pace. Congratulations on a superb story well narrated.

Unreal!

I had a strange love/hate relationship with this book. I loved it when things were going well, and totally had to put it down when things weren't working out. But then of course I had to pick it up again in case things worked out after all. I loved the language used and the descriptions were original and captivating. There are many awesome quotes I'd love to add to my vision board. And the amount of foul language, in a world far too focussed on propriety, was deliciously refreshing. The book took me into a wonderful world of wild imagination where I made friends with a dragon and got to understand teenagers and their goofy ways much better - my daughter is Squib's age so this is very helpful. I highly recommend this book if you want to be taken on a bit of a wild ride.

Grew up with Artemis Fowl?

You definitely wont be disappointed - entertaining, action packed and fun, Colfer is still brilliant for how he can make magic feel at home in reality.
