Märchen bildet in China kein streng gesondertes Gebiet. Von den Ammengeschichten und Fabeln bis zu Göttermythen, Sagen und Novellen sind die Grenzen durchaus schwankend. Das Wunderbare gehört für China noch zum natürlichen Weltlauf, so dass hier sich keine scharfe Grenze ziehen lässt.

Zwanzig Meilen östlich von Gingdschou ist der Mädchensee. Er hat einige Meilen im Geviert. Er ist von dichtem, grünem Gebüsch und hohen Wäldern rings umgeben. Sein Wasser ist klar und tiefblau. Oft zeigt sich darin allerlei Wundergetier. Die Leute der Umgegend haben dort einen Tempel errichtet für die Drachenprinzessin. In dürren Zeiten wallfahrten sie alle dahin, um zu beten.
