Teresa di Gesù, o d'Ávila, (28 marzo 1515 - 15 ottobre 1582) è stata una mistica spagnola, nonché Dottore della Chiesa. Dopo un travagliato percorso interiore, completò la sua "conversione" a trentanove anni, e fondò a sua volta l'ordine per frati e monache dei Carmelitani scalzi, in cui la regola non accettava le mitigazioni dei Carmelitani.
Scrisse vari testi in cui presenta la sua esperienza e insegnamenti sull'orazione. Dopo il 1567, su ordine del suo confessore Pedro Ibáñez, scrisse la sua autobiografia, qui esposta con la traduzione e la introduzione di Valentino Piccoli.
