Aleksej Konstantinovic Tolstoj, cugino di secondo grado del Tolstoj più famoso (1817-1875) ha scritto vari racconti storici fra cui questo, il cui titolo originale era "Il principe Serebranyj". Questo è un romanzo storico alla Walter Scott che fu subito popolarissimo in Russia, dove è rimasto anche fra le letture scolastiche fino al nostro secolo.
Al romanzo, tradotto da Federigo Verdinois, è stato cambiato il titolo perché l'altro grande protagonista di esso è appunto Ivan il Terribile, grande figura storica in esso ritratta. L'autore cita puntualmente le fonti a cui ha attinto per le sue ricostruzioni, e descrive dettagliatamente costumi e usi dell'epoca. Cornice musicale: "Sinfonia n. 1" di Tchaikovksy
