Krimi mit Lokalkolorit: Als der Privatdetektiv Gerhard te Laak stirbt, löst dies eine Welle von Ermittlungen des Klever Kriminalkommissariats K1 um Helmut Toppe aus. Abgeschlachtete Zuchthengste und mysteriöse Todesfälle in einem Seniorenheim spielen dabei eine zentrale Rolle. Die Ermittlungen führen das bewährte Ermittlungsteam bis nach Uedem - für die meisten von ihnen schon "feindliches Ausland".

Gemeinsam sind sie das Trio Criminale, wohnen in Kleve und und schwelgen seit 1988 in gemeinsamen Leidenschaften (darunter Doppelkopf, Pin Sec und Monty Python's Flying Circus): Hiltrud Leenders (geb. 1955) studierte Germanistik und Anglistik, ist Übersetzerin, Initiatorin und Mitbegründerin zweier Montessori-Kinderhäuser und einer Montessori-Schule in Kleve. Seit 1984 veröffentlicht sie Lyrik und Artikel in pädagogischen Zeitschriften. Sie hat zwei Kinder und ist verheiratet mit Artur Leenders (geb. 1954). Dieser ist Dr. med. und arbeitet als Unfallchirurg. In seiner Freizeit ist er Jazzgitarrist und interessiert sich besonders für Kriminalistik und Gerichtsmedizin. Michael Bay (geb. 1955) ist Diplompsychologe in der forensischen Suchtabteilung des Krankenhauses Bedburg-Hau.
