Publisher's Summary

Join Greg Laurie, pastor and bestselling author of Steve McQueen: The Salvation of an American Icon, as he takes you on a personal journey into the life and legend of Johnny Cash.

At the peak of his career, Cash had done it all - living the ultimate rags-to-riches story of growing up on a cotton farm in the Deep South to becoming a Nashville and Hollywood sensation, singing alongside heroes like Elvis Presley and performing for several American presidents.

But through all of this, Cash was troubled. By the time he released the iconic Man in Black album in 1971, the middle-aged icon was broken down, hollow-eyed, and wrung out.

In his search for peace, Cash became embroiled in controversy. He was arrested five times in seven years. His drug- and alcohol-induced escapades led to car accidents and a forest fire that devastated 508 acres. His time was divided between Jesus and jail, gospel tunes and the “Cocaine Blues.”

But by the end of his life, Cash was speaking openly about his “unshakeable faith.” What caused the superstar to turn from his conflicting passions to embrace a life in Christ?

Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon dives deep into the singer’s inner demons, triumphs, and gradual return to faith. Laurie interviews Cash’s family, friends, and business associates to reveal how the singer’s true success came through finding the only Person whose star was bigger than his own.

Best Cash biography by far

This was so amazing and real. No glossing over Johnny and June issues. This books shows the Man in Black for who he really was, sinner and saint. Tells the truth without personal bias or judgment. Just wonderful.

Wow

I became a Johnny cash fan in 2002 when I heard “I hung my head” in a record store. I’ve been hooked ever since. This book contained a lot about cash I didn’t know. I’ve been listening to Greg Laurie for several years. As much as Greg and johnny are different and I listen to each of them for different reasons, there is a lot in common between them that I listen to them both for too. That common factor is something that unites many people around the world: Jesus Christ. This book talks a lot about Johnny and his life but one main constant throughout his story is Jesus. I can’t recommend this book enough. As I went through each chapter I felt compelled to go back and listen to the music mentioned. It’s been a fun ride and has had me listening to Johnny as much as when I first discovered him.

I didn't know I didn't know so much

I learned a lot from this listen to "Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon". Unless you have studied the life of this man I can guarantee you will too.

You will learn about his legendary up and down and up and down and up and down career and his influence in the music industry. You will learn about his lifelong battle with addictions. You will learn about his up and down relationship with his family and his longing for approval from his father that he never received.

Throughout all of his journey through life the one surprise you will learn is his faith in his heavenly Father, although it had its ups and downs too, was the one constant thread through it all.

You might also learn it bears a lot of similarity to your own faith journey and that will encourage you.

Get it and begin your journey through this one today. You will be glad you did.

Stunning and hope-filled

As a Johnny Cash fan this book was filled with information I never knew. The author does a fantastic job discussing the hope and hurt this world is filled with. The author also does great introducing the listener to the stresses and heartache of the entertainment business. I love how the book takes you on a journey through Johnny’s life and faith.
I will recommend this book without hesitation.

Exceptional

I grew up a huge fan of Johnny Cash. I've always felt that Hollywood did John a disservice in Walk the Line by leaving out the good stuff. Thank you Greg Laurie for telling the story of the struggles but also his deep faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It's the best book I have ever listened to on Audible and I've listened to a lot. Thank you for telling this incredible story!

interesting Man: Johnny Cash

Good book. Authors don't whitewash Cash's shortcomings, but give a holistic view of his life.
