Fu il romanzo più letto al suo tempo ed è oggi considerato il suo romanzo migliore.La storia è ambientata nel 1757, nella “guerra dei sette anni” che vide i Francesi strumentalizzare, nella loro guerra contro gli Inglesi per il predominio in alcune colonie, alcune tribù dei nativi americani.
