Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Make Your Bed, written and read by William H. McRaven.

The incredible number one New York Times best seller.

Make your bed to change the world....

'What starts here changes the world' was the university slogan that inspired William H. McRaven to take charge of the small things that could change his life...and even the world. Here McRaven shares the 10 life-changing principles he learned during his 37 years as a Navy SEAL. These 10 philosophies helped him to overcome challenges not only in his career but also throughout his life. What's more anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves, and the world, for the better....

Begin each day with a simple task, help one another through life, respect everyone, know that your life won't be fair and that you will fail often, take risks, step up when times are tough, face down the bullies, lift up the downtrodden and never, ever give up.

Do these things, and we will live in a far better world than the one before it....

Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple and universal wisdom, practical advice and words of encouragement that will inspire listeners to achieve more even in life's darkest moments.

Short and succinct.

At one point because of external circumstances, I wasn't much into this book. Then came the part where he was talking about not quitting. I took his advice and finished it in one sitting, and thank God that I listened to him. I will never be the same again. Thank you admiral. I am one of those who you have changed. I salute you.

Spine chilling but simplistic

Admiral McRaven's experiences during his US Navy seal training or during his Iraq and Afghanistan postings had some spine chilling examples. Surely it would energize the young especially those who want to take a military career. However in today's world of technology esp AI and biotech, may has less relevance. Also I found the book a simplistic expansion of his speech. the content is small and has parts of repeatedly saying the same thing.

Sweeping proclamations and not the little things

A star for effort. That's all I can think of unfortunately. It didn't quite turn out as I had hoped.

I can attribute my lack of concentration on my short attention span or an incoherent narrative or both.

Mr. McRaven means well, but I didn't find his advice very practical.

Sublime guidance

I don't have anything to do with military, but this speech and book has impressed me and guided me for the last few years.
It is a short book but you can read it or hear it many times and always find something new and underdtand deeper it's content.

Missed opportunity

Basic. On the surface. Emotionless. Detached. Seems like the book was produced in one day. I genuinelly believe that Admiral has some nice and inspiring stories to tell. But he did not put the effort to tell them to us. This short book felt like an avarega ad to become a navy seal. I recommend listening to Cant hurt me by David Goggins as that is a verz similiar book in terms of its topic and goal, but is just SO MUCH better.

Great book! short and easy to follow.

The lessons are great, short and easy to understand straight away. Make it clear how small tasks can help to motivated ourselves and move forward every day. Life could be easy or difficult, but how we approach it every time will make the difference! I watched the YouTube video and discussed about it with my children, now young adults during dinner, and really enjoyed to hear their comments, followed by their questions and comments in regards to similarities with life and day to day activities in general. Really enjoyed this book! Thanks!

Short and sweet

The lessons are great, short and sweet. The voice is not that easy to listen to.
The whole book is about the speech that went viral, if you liked the speech you will like the details behind it described in the book.

compelling advice, but...

Some great examples here, from someone who's clearly been through a lot, and his approach to life has helped him do this.
However if you have no interest in the military, or the elite squads, or how awesome commander X was, the constant military terms are quite tiresome.

Some good stories and points but quite short.

Once you get to the points of do one task like make your bed and never quit there wasn't much else apart from how hard Seal training is. I felt there was more which could of been told.

A guide for life

Would you consider the audio edition of Make Your Bed to be better than the print version?

Any book narrated by the author will have an extra "something" compared to the printed version and this book is no different.

What did you like best about this story?

The short chapters make this an easy book to "dip into".

What about Admiral William H. McRaven’s performance did you like?

The Admiral isn't a trained actor or performer but this adds to the authenticity and enhances his genuine respect for those who have guided and influenced his life.

Any additional comments?

I would like to think one day the Admiral will write a more extensive autobiography and share an insider's view of the World we now live in and it's recent history.

Less is most definitely more.

No need for flowery prose when the best lessons are simple.

Accent isn't the easiest at first but coming from the author gave the narrative greater authority.

Life changing

I absolutely loved this book! Not only were the stories real, but the narrating had me on the edge of my seat and it had me crying, laughing, and cheering along the way. Although I thoroughly enjoyed it I did find it somewhat confronting at the same time. When someone can relay stories of such unimaginable occurances of some incredible men to get across the morals that are very relevant in your life is crazy! I have learnt alot about myself through listening to this and have identified not only some of my strengths, but also how to deal with some of my weaknesses.
A very powerful story indeed, absolutely loved it.
