Publisher's Summary

Once upon a time, there was a guy who got so fed up with life that he resorted to murder and mayhem just to feel alive.

Lorenzo Gambini is bored. So f--king bored. Most people either annoy him or avoid him, afraid to face him. Figuratively. Literally. With his face partially disfigured, scarred, he looks every bit the monster the stories make him out to be: the notorious Scar. They say he's a sociopath. Maybe he's a psychopath. Whatever path he's on, people tend to stay far away from it.

Until one day, a young woman bumps right into him - a woman just as fed up with life, but for much different reasons. With a scarlet letter inked on her wrist and secrets buried deep in her soul, Morgan Myers is running from something...or maybe somebody. Lorenzo isn't quite sure. You can bet your ass he's going to figure it out, though.

Contains mature themes.

Buyer be Ware, It's a Cliffhanger

Ok, so I'll start off with explaining my review process. A 5 star book must contain the following nine areas: Lots of laughs/heart wrentching or both , hot steamy sex, relatable/believable (I don't care if it's about vampires or mythical creatures, as long as the rest of the story is convincing), excellent narration, detailed but not excessively, keeps your attention and finally, worth listening to more than once. This book was not the best I've ever listened to but not the worst either....was OK. It contained 5 out of the 9. I will however say the suspense was great (and I hate suspenses, I'm the person who reads the last chapter of a book if the suspense is too much of a wait), and the plot was completely unpredictable. It's not your average story but enjoyable. Lastly, I hate cliffhangers with a passion, because I simply cannot wait to know what will happen next, and in many cases, it leaves me pissed off for days; but this one didn't leave me angry at all, I could live a few months or years for the next book. Which translates to being just an OK book.

Dark and less than perfect

Lorenzo and Morgan are such an interesting pair. Lorenzo is a cold hearted killer and crime boss. Morgan is a stripper with a sad secret. One thing I liked about this story is that it's not hearts and flowers. For one, the hero has a terrifying scar on his face, making him blind in one eye. The heroine picks pockets and often finds herself at the mercy of very predatory men. There is also an interesting but tragic twist in her backstory (no spoilers). While Lorenzo and Morgan do end up together, I would argue that they have more of a FWB situation than a romantic relationship. Their banter was funny despite the dark tone of the story. Just a heads up, this ends on a cliffhanger.

I liked Iggy Toma. He really understood the characters and the story.

Another great story!

I haven’t read a J. M. Darhower book that I haven’t enjoyed and this one is no exception. The author created another world that is definitely unputdownable.

Amazing!

This was probably one of the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to. Well written, superbly narrated, I wished it was even longer. I’m glad there’s a sequel, which I’ve immediately purchased.

I won’t give away plot details, except to say that this isn’t your normal girl-next-door falls for sweet/hot/misunderstood alpha male. These are two broken people living hard, tumultuous lives. They aren’t perfect or even very nice in many cases. But this makes the story 10x better, and way more fascinating.

Narration was excellent. First time I’ve listened to either, and I’ll be frantically looking for more. Iggy sounded like the Joker to me in some instances, and it worked lol. She did a great job with Morgan, and her kid voices were spot on.

Don’t hesitate, get this book.

A male protagonist I can't help but love.

Both main characters were just amazing, but Lorenzo in particular was something else. That character's personality was so big, it was hard to believe he wasn't a real person or at least based on one. He's one cold, psychotic, hilarious, callous mother f'er, and I love him. He's the perfect mix of messed up and funny, maybe even a little insane with the way everything he does seems to be the result of his utter boredom with being the king of his own domain with no one ever challenging him. He and Morgan are perfect, and their banter made me smile so many times throughout subject matter that was not the darkest I've ever heard, but not even close to being light, either. The comedy sprinkled in is a perfect buffer that added something special to the story and kept it from being too much sad backstory driving present behaviors. Morgan was an amazingly strong female protagonist as well, and I loved her spunk around Lorenzo. These two are a pair of protagonists that are probably some of the most strongly developed characters I've come across in a long time and I felt like the story was secondary to them in their own little bubble but that was okay, better than okay. I loved this book, and I can't wait to read the second one.

Must read

If you into the dark romance mafia genre you must read this series. It's one of the most realistic ones if any with a regular mobster(with real personality) and a sex worker(who isn't afraid to be her) that you won't find in much of at all on other books. Lorenzo and Morgan both come from trouble past but they don't let that defy them and are just moving on with living. This story had me laughing because of their good dynamic and not give a shit attitude about the world that looks down on you.

Loved them!

I was really surprised how much I liked these books! There was actually a storyline.
Somehow, I feel like I have become desensitized listening to/reading romance novels with the nonstop sex that you hear over and over again.
Not these though! Lorenzo kept me smiling and laughing until the end. I’m going to miss these two characters!

An addictive story!

I discovered JM Darhower with Monster in his Eyes trilogy. And now I read Menace and loved it ! It is fast-paced, full of action and suspense with two great main characters! A badass mobster and a sassy smart woman who pickpockets and works in a bar for a living ... so many secrets are hidden and keep us hooked; add to that the banter and the hilarious moments ... it delivers a wonderful story, with emotional moments too!
The performance of the narrators?? One of the best!

LOVED THIS BOOK! 5 stars! ❤️

This story was brilliant. Both voice actors fit the roles perfectly. Lorenzo’s character is so funny and entertaining 😍 One of the best male characters I’ve come across in a book. This book was SO steamy at times too WOWZA! Not the typical romance book I go for, in fact this was my first mafia romance and I’m hooked!! Not to mention it leaves you on a cliffhanger! Can’t wait to read part 2 ❤️❤️

Riveting, funny, heart breaking.. a must read!

This story is witty, gripping and had me smiling throughout. Morgan (Scarlett) is our troubled heroine, with a troubled past and a gritty future where she struggles to get by day by day, surviving the nights and chasing the sunrise always hopeful for a better day. She is running from her demon who is determined to catch her. Lorenzo (Scar) our unwitting hero, an equally troubled past of different sort, a criminal brutal, cold hearted murderer who enjoys what he does and cares for few. The two meet in an unconventional way, Lorenzo is drawn to her and even when he has no reason to keep her in his life, he does. Morgan is guarded throughout this book and discloses little to us or Lorenzo about why she's running or who she's running from until near the end of the book. The chemistry between them is explosive yet realistic. The story is well crafted and their banter is lively and sharp witted. I will be reading the next instalment straight away.

A MAFIA FEEL ROMANCE. IT WAS EXCITING

Well, that was exciting, I loved this book, the characters and the anticipation of what was going to happen next all the way through.

Menace had that mafia feel to it although Lorenzo Gambini or Scar as he is called is not a mafia boss, he's not exactly a guy who's on the straight and narrow either, he has his men at the click of his fingertips and Lorenzo is a man other men fear.
Lorenzo is the man with a scar, a crook, a villain but also a loving brother, Lorenzo is a man of layers who firmly keeps the mask on and hides behind the scar.

Morgan or Scarlet as Lorenzo starts to call her due to a letter S on her wrist is a woman with backbone, she's is on the run and works in a club, Morgan is also a woman with many layers, she's strong and resilient, I liked Morgan's character.

Morgan and Lorenzo first meet in a bar and she pickpockets him, he finds her and if it were any other person they would be dead but something about Morgan draws him to her, he is curious and her fiery character he finds refreshing. Morgan stands with her head high were other men would cower, Morgan is different and shows no fear.

The two are thrust together again when Morgan's past comes to find her and Lorenzo takes her under his wing.

Menace is a great story it's exciting, I loved Lorenzo he can be funny without meaning to be and he's so smooth.

I loved how Lorenzo addresses the reader, listening to this on audio it really brought the book to life, even more, when you have a character that also talks to the reader even though it may have been Lorenzo saying something like "I'm not sure what you're laughing at either". Its not much but I loved how JM Darhower has done that.

Menace is a two-part book and like all two-part story's you are just getting all the answers to your questions, things are just getting even more interesting and then it's finished.

Menace is hot with some sizzling scenes, filled with suspense and interesting characters, it has the element of dark and a mafia feel. It was great I loved it.

I am definitely reading book 2 I can't wait to jump into that one, I have it on my kindle unlimited and then I downloaded the audio for £2.99, Bargain.

Grabs you from the start

Would you consider the audio edition of Menace to be better than the print version?

Not necessarily better, just that the narrators bring the story and characters to life.

Have you listened to any of Kasha Kensington and Iggy Toma ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No, but I think they both did wonderful jobs with all the different accents and tones to make each voice distinguishable from others.

Any additional comments?

If you like mafia-esque type romances, this will probably be right up your alley. Very enjoyable narration.
