 かつて理想に燃え、幻の帝国「満洲国」建設に青春を賭けた主人公の青木隆造――。

敗戦後は福祉事業団兼愛園の園長となり混血児収容、保護教育を自己の責務として全うするのだったが、その内面には果てない曠野が拡がっていた。
