Padri e figli, del 1862, il capolavoro di Turgenev, è considerato da molti come una delle creazioni meglio riuscite della novellistica dell'ottocento, anche se i critici russi contemporanei non lo apprezzarono. Nel romanzo l'autore descrive in modo estremamente efficace il primo diffondersi delle idee rivoluzionarie e nichiliste in Russia. Il personaggio principale del romanzo, Bazarov, è un propugnatore di tali idee, ma si trova in conflitto con le proprie emozioni, che la sua mente non esita a tacciare come “sciocchi romanticismi”.
