Publisher's Summary

How can we trust God in the dark?

Framed around the nighttime prayer of Compline, Tish Harrison Warren, author of Liturgy of the Ordinary, explores themes of human vulnerability, suffering, and God's seeming absence. When she navigated a time of doubt and loss, the prayer was grounding for her. She writes: "It was this practice that gave me words for my anxiety and grief and allowed me to reencounter doctrines of the church - the church's claims about reality - not as rational, tidy little antidotes for pain but as a light in darkness, as good news." Where do we find comfort when we lie awake worrying or weeping in the night? This book offers a prayerful and frank approach to the difficulties in our ordinary lives at work, at home, and in a world filled with uncertainty.

Excellent!

This is a beautiful mediation on the Keep Watch prayer in the BCP. Very helpful as we wrestle with the fact of suffering and the reality of a good and present God.

Beautiful book

Beautiful book on prayer, reflections on pain and suffering; and also joy, beauty and pleasure; and ultimately God's constant love for us. Inspired me to view prayer in a new light.

Amazing and insightful

I was aware of the Compline but had never used it regularly as a spiritual practice. Tish's excellent walk through along with her compelling story all in her own voice makes this a must listen.

An excellent book, part apologetics, part practical and all beautiful! our culture is terrible at grieving, this book not only acknowledges this but goes beyond with helpful stories and practices.
