Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Bono—artist, activist and the lead singer of Irish rock band U2—has written a memoir: honest and irreverent, intimate and profound, Surrender is the story of the remarkable life he’s lived, the challenges he’s faced and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him.

Narrated by the author, Surrender is an intimate, immersive listening experience, telling stories from Bono’s early days in Dublin, to joining a band and playing sold out stadiums around the world with U2, plus his more than 20 years of activism.

Throughout a remarkable life, music has always been a constant for Bono and in the audiobook, his distinctive voice is interwoven with a very personal soundtrack adding atmosphere and texture to each and every scene. From moments of classic U2 hits to snippets by The Clash, Patti Smith, Verdi, Johnny Cash and Mozart, Surrender also exclusively features clips of newly recorded reimagined versions of U2 songs including ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’, ‘With Or Without You’, ‘One’, ‘Beautiful Day’ and more, glimpsed for the first time on Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.

As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was 14, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than 20 years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. Writing with candor, self-reflection, and humor, Bono opens the aperture on his life—and the family, friends and faith that have sustained, challenged and shaped him.

Surrender’s subtitle, '40 Songs, One Story,' is a nod to the book’s 40 chapters, which are each named after a U2 song.

One of the best audiobook experiences!

I've listened to hundreds of audiobooks and this is something special. The performance and production is just another level. The content is more subjective. I've been a U2 fan for a long time and have followed Bono for decades now. So it was great to hear him share his story.

Bono is sublime, authentic and vulnerable!

This was a journey of inflection, reflection and nostalgia. His own personal struggle is one I identify with in so many ways. I loved the truth and beauty and rawness of the 40 year journal of one of the greatest song-makers of a generation. I’ll need to listen to it a few more times to extract all the gold it contains.

Powerful and humble, a privilege to read.

Bono writes with humility, gratitude and generosity to all those who he has encountered throughout his remarkable journey and life. I am in awe and respect of how he and his inner circle have put their talents and energy into such remarkable humanitarian work, while continuing to be exceptional entertainers. From South Africa I thank you for the magnificent and largely unsung contribution you have made to this crazy, beautiful world of ours. Thank you.

Best peotic and honest Rock star Autobiography

Loved the beauty of the storytelling and the journey Bono takes us as he and U2 grow into one of the most memorable Rock bands that continues to inspire me to be a better version of myself. Thank Bono for the hope your songs gave a kid "coloured" kid in South Africa that is now heading towards his 50s still inspired by the music of U2 to Surrender to all life has for me.

Simply Beautiful!

Thanks Bono for putting your life into words to share such amazing lessons on life, being a force for good, love, purpose, fame, family and so much more.

Love your narration especially the vocal impersonations.

The “Pride” performance and true love from Adam literally had me in tears at the love for each another in U2.

Please keep making music, the world needs U2!

Bono is basically a big phony

Its hard to really know what to make of Bono. On the one hand there is a lot to like, he has a self deprecating manner and a lot of his charity work is admirable. Of course for me it was really about U2's music which I continue to really like. U2 are a legendary band whether you like them or not. However, what is disturbing about Bono is he is friends with all these terrible globalists who are enslaving the world by circumventing the sovereignty of nations and subverting democracy throughout the world. People like Soros, the Clintons, Bill Gates, Nancy Pelosi and so on. These are not good people and what they want should be resisted with all our strength. On top of that you have his and the bands support for the barbaric practice of abortion and you find yourself wondering if Bono is basically a puppet of the Epstein crowd.

An extraordinary Audiobook

Bono takes his extraordinary story and takes us on a theatrical tour of words and music.
As a piece of sound production, the audiobook is remarkable. He weaves the stories and the music together to take what is a good story and makes it great.
The whole is told with an endearing candour. The unfamiliar elements to the story, in particular about the campaign to get AIDS drugs to Africa make for gripping reading. Highly recommended.

Compelling

What an experience!! As I listened, I pictured how it feels to read the written word, where your mind is trying to conjure up the images & the sounds of the story. This was a movie for the ears, where the tone of Bono's brogue was soothing & natural. His excellent impersonations of the characters in his story & the music just add to it. His expressions of love for Ali are very moving without being in your face. For all his apparent posturing on the world stage, he has worked hard & genuinely, & his heart is in absolutely the right place.

Not just an audio book

The sound design is easily the best I’ve heard on an audiobook- Bono said the aim was to create the Sgt Pepper of audiobooks… this is better. It’s Abbey Road.

Revelatory

Beautifully written with an honesty which is rare. Bono has taken a pin and burst my wrong opinion that he would be an egotistical rock star. Only He could narrate this. Funny, emotional, witty and sprinkled with music this is worth a listen and parting with your hard earned cash in these straitened times.

All That He Can't Leave Behind ..

How refreshing for a rock star memoir to not open with the sub headline: 'my drink and drugs hell'.. Bono has always been a rebel against rock's more traditional rebellion. No tales of throwing TVs out of hotel windows here. Instead he's always been more an ideas person. They're his drug of choice. His speed. As an idealist who puts his head above the parapet he's bound  to get shot at more than most. And for all his personal and U2's victories over the years there's falls and failures too, to which he's more than willing to explore in this candid and very humble memoir. Certainly there's the expected celebrity name checking both from the entertainment and political worlds of his music and activism but throughout it's his family, band and friends that stand out the most. Less a rock star memoir this is more a personal soul searching journey into his faith, hope and beliefs. It's very much the man behind the shades opening his heart even more.Always far more interesting than his toughest critics Bono has the right balance here of  earnestness, honesty and fun to be engaging. He's great company on this entertaining telling of his incredible life. There's some nice use of his music throughout too..

An insanely well produced compelling story

I sat in my driveway for 40 minutes (having arrived home) listening intently as I really didn't want it too end. This audible presentation has it all, sound effects, music snippets and probably one of the most compelling stories ever told by a man who was blessed with a voice that could make reciting the yellow pages interesting!!..

I really enjoyed this book and genuinely didn't think Mr Springsteen or Mr Grohl could ever be topped. Do yourself a favour and ration this book too an hour a day as you will be so sad when it ends!!

More than an audiobook this was a complete production. Vulnerable and honest reflection by Bono about himself his life the band and the business. Touchingly honest and vulnerable in places and in others laugh out loud funny. I have no doubt I will listen to this book many more times and discover more layers of understanding about the man his altruism genius and love for humankind.

Riveting, Exquisite, Extraordinary

I am an avid reader and a children’s author, editor.
This is the best book by far I’ve ever read, made even better, incredibly, that Bono read it to me.
It is the first time I’ve finished a book and immediately gone back to the beginning to start again.
Precious and soul searching honesty, humbling, humour, transformational insights, questions, potential lingering answers.
I am blown away by this audible experience. Thank you, to Bono for writing this and to everyone in U2 and connected with them for making this story possible.
