Publisher's Summary

An enthralling tale of love and war, terror and survival from best-selling author Jacqueline Winspear.

When Catherine Saxon, an American correspondent reporting on the war in Europe, is found murdered in her London digs, news of her death is concealed by British authorities. Serving as a linchpin between Scotland Yard and the Secret Service, Robert MacFarlane pays a visit to Maisie Dobbs, seeking her help. Accompanied by an agent from the US Department of Justice - Mark Scott, the American who helped Maisie escape Hitler’s Munich in 1938 - he asks Maisie to work with Scott to uncover the truth about Saxon's death. Maisie must balance the demands of solving this dangerous case with her need to protect the young evacuee she has grown to love.

Entangled in an investigation linked to the power of wartime propaganda and American political intrigue being played out in Britain, Maisie will face losing her dearest friend.

Superb!

I've enjoyed all the Maisie Dobbs stories so much. I listen to many books , including Winston Churchill and Michael Portillo and others who write about WW1 and WW2 both factually
and as novels and Ms Winspear's dedication to truth is wonderful. I hope there are more Maisie Dobbs stories to come! Thanks you.

Riveting!

Maisie Dobbs faces another mysterious case, the murder of an American journalist, and its tentacles reach dangerously high into British-American political relations. In "The American Agent," Jacquline Winspear delivers another excellent murder mystery and makes the days of autumn 1940 come alive. Riveting and most enjoyable.

Brilliant and riveting story

I love all of the Maisie Donna books and this is the best one yet - Jacqueline Winspear is a stunning writer. Weaving both a brilliant whodunit that you’re never quite sure who did it till almost the end, but also a saga following Maisie from when she was a young girl through the decades chronicling her life and experiences in such a way as to bring the reader or in my case, the listener deep into the heart of Maisie Dobbs. Im just about to start book 16 and I’m distraught that they are just 3 books to go in the series.

As good as Jacqueline’s writing is, it is the Oscar performance narration provided by the wonderful Julia Teal that brings it all to life. Her voice is pure gold, able to jump from one character to the next to the point where I’m convinced there is more than one person involved, so good is her narration.

Do yourself a favour and discover the world of Maisie Dobbs like I did, it will give you hours of enjoyment and pleasure.

Thank you Jacqueline & Julia.

New plans for Maisie Dobbs

A good addition to the series in terms of Maisie’s life and describing wartime London. Unfortunately the narration very much spoils it for me, as Julie Teal’s attempt at Scottish and American accents are really dreadful, and those characters feature more in this book than others

Mothers of Invention

Usual complex events you'd expect from Maisie Dobbs, perfectly narrated. Tribulations, traumas and intense emotion all round. Threads tied nicely, but not how I wanted it. GREAT BOOK

Great Story

An interesting glimpse into wartime conditions into outer London and the capital. How it was not all as easy or cheerful as mainly portrayed. I enjoyed the story (my first Masie Dobbs novel). I thought the narration excellent.

Absolutely brilliant!!

I have read/listened to all the Maisie Dobbs books and enjoyed them all. This book however was a real treat and probably counts as one of my favourites. The plot was gripping, the characters authentic and the experience of being in the Blitz so real.
My only slight criticism might be Miss Teal's ability to employ foreign accents - the Australian one in particular did wobble about a bit- but she does such a good job as Maisie that I didn't wish to knock off a star just for that.
I cannot wait for the next one and can only hope that Maisie's life develops as the end of this story hints it might!!

Still hooked

Julie Teal your UK & USA accents are just so good bringing it all to life. Us antipodeans will forgive your Australian/NZ attempts - luckily they were small parts & Im sure everyone’s accents became one during the war 🥰

Great story. Mostly good narration

Terrific story as usual with the balance of cool-headed detection, drama and romance in wartime setting.
Julie Teal is a wonderful professional narrator with a wide variety of the male and female voices, tones, pace and pauses but her “Australian” accent was ghastly. If she mangled any UK regional accent that badly, she’d be deported.
