Publisher's Summary

They had the perfect plan to start a new life together...before it all went horribly wrong.

A new twisting novel of psychological suspense from the acclaimed author of The Girl I Used to Be.

Coworkers Ruby and Harry are in love - but they're married to other people. They decide to tell their spouses that their marriages are over and to start a new life together. Ruby has wanted to leave her controlling husband for a while, so she tells him she's leaving and waits at the hotel where she and Harry are to meet. But Harry never shows up.

Suddenly, Ruby has lost everything. Harry won't answer her calls, and she's fired from her job. She finds a cheap apartment in a run-down part of town, all the while wondering what happened to Harry.

Just as Ruby thinks she's hit rock bottom, strange and menacing things start to happen - someone is sneaking into her apartment, and someone is following her home late at night - and she is going to have to fight for her survival.

Excellent Book

This audiobook sucked me in from the very beginning and didn't let go. I absolutely loved it. Great plot and characters, suspense, superb narration. What more can you ask for? Listen to this one, you won't be sorry! Highly recommended.

Much ado about nothing

Very disappointed would be the best I can say about this book. The writing was beautiful but about so much nothing. The plot twists were a big let down to the build up. Ruby is just another weak woman making poor choices, Emma is somewhat better at the end but basically the same during the story. The mystery that troubles Ruby isn’t a mystery just the same thing I’ve read a thousand times and I knew what was happening immediately. The climax was somewhat better but very sudden and unfulfilling. The actors were amazing and perfect in their parts. Listened at 1.5 speed trying to get to the point. Still, as I said, the writing was lovely and I would (maybe) try another by this author.

Excellent! And I am PICKY!

Great character development, kept me guessing, rooting for the 'bad guy(s) at times, then regaining perspective. Just excellent!

Fast paced and satisfying

This book begins with a bang--it's about as good an opening as I can imagine. It proceeds at a fast pace, keeping me engaged throughout. During the last couple of hours of listening, the focus is more on psychological growth than on suspense. Overall rating: 4.5 stars rounded up

CRAZY STORY

This was such a good listen. Couldn't stop and so many unexpected things happened. Only complaint is one of the narrator's voices kind of drove my crazy! Whoever voiced for Emma seemed too dramatic.

Almost Returned

There are two narrators and one is truly awful. She reads every sentence the exact same way and sounds near robotic. The other (the narrator of Ruby) saved the book for me. Enjoyed the book overall - was an interesting enough story.

Don’t understand all the rave reviews

Usually I love the domestic noir psychological thriller genre, but this did not do it for me. It was a book about people who all just lack morals and there is no twist...? I thought it was depressing with no wonderful pay off - it was just okay. Either way, narrators were great!

Boring

Kept waiting for something to happen. A betrayal or a huge twist, and it never did. Just boring.
