Publisher's Summary

Introducing your new crime thriller fix: Bristol detective DS George Cross, champion of the outsider, the voiceless and the dispossessed.

DS George Cross can be rude, difficult and awkward with people. But his unfailing logic and dogged pursuit of the truth means his conviction rate is the best on the force. So when his police colleagues dismiss the death of a man as a squabble among Bristol's homeless community, Detective Sergeant George Cross is not convinced.

Who was the unknown man whose weather-beaten body is discovered on Clifton Downs? Did the tragedy that led to a life on the streets also lead to his death?

As he delves into the dead man's past, Cross becomes convinced that to catch this killer, he needs to solve a cold case murder from years before. A murder that someone has got away with for 15 years....

Unique Detective Story

Intriguing first outing for a detective with Asperger's. He frustrates his colleague with his fixation on detail and consistency in evidence, but gets results. Bristol-based (as a change from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds or Edinburgh) it had quite a few twists and unexpected turns along the way. It will be good to follow the series and to find out more about Cross, his colleague Ottey who struggles to cope with his eccentricities and his boss Dawson, who wants results even at the expense of the facts not quite being to hand. Not forgetting his patient father. Recommended and led me straight to his second book, The Cyclist.
John Heffernan was excellent with the delivery of the story

A most interesting and different police mystery

My wife and I both really enjoyed this first book in the DC Cross series. Perfect balance of story, characters, mystery and police procedural. Just got the 2nd and hope there will be many more in the series.

BEST truly The Best

I have read all three D S Cross novels. Each book is grander than the last. The hour by hour reading is such that I don’t want the mystery solved nor for the book to end. I patiently await another.

IT'S BEEN DONE

A main character having Asperger syndrome, such as the cop in this novel (or the physician in the TV show "Dr. House" and Sheldon Cooper on "The Big Bang Theory" and Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and Forrest Gump, etc.) has been greatly overdone in recent years, so it was surprising that this author went with Asperger's for his character in "The Dentist". I quit listening to the audiobook after the first hour or so because the cop was so unlikeable, which the author blamed on Asperger's but was really just an excuse for a poorly written character. I do not recommend this audiobook at all.

Long winded and irritating main character

Didn’t really enjoy the story! Too many words and names to remember! Main character didn’t get my vote of confidence or sympathy- in fact he annoyed me!

Different kind of detective

Good listen, interesting characters, definitely left me wanting more. Well done performance by Mr. Heffernan. The voice actor telling the story makes or breaks an audio recording no matter how good the story is. Both were great. Thank you for sharing your talents!

Surprised how much I enjoyed it!

At first it seemed a little slow with lots and lots or character building. Then in a few chapters I was hooked. Can’t wait to read the next one.

No negatives on this one

Story kept me wanting to keep listening. The twists were good, the characters well developed, and the narrator spot on. Will read more in this series!

A good listen

I really enjoyed this book. I listen to a great many detective stories in a year and can’t think why I have missed this author before. The story was solid and realistic and the voice performance was excellent. I particularly appreciated the character of DS Cross since I have a grandson with Asperger’s so I am familiar with some of DS Cross’s behaviours and views on life which made me smile with understanding. I am now definitely ready for book no.2

A great listen.

I really enjoyed this audio book, a really well written story with a plot that just rolled out piece by piece. The cast of characters were a joy to discover and follow.
My one small problem was that they were not described physically, this always helps me to picture them in my mind as the story unfolds.

SATISFYING READ

The first book I’d read in this series was The Monk …….hooked straight away ! So went to try the first in the series. .
Complex and thoroughly enjoyable . Following how the brain of DS Cross works gives these books another interesting dimension.
He handles the case with determination and doggedness . It’s intriguing right from the start , and doesn’t disappoint .
I’m just wanting to start on the next book right now !

Disappointed

Maybe other reviews raised my expectations but I found the narration rather wooden and that the repeteated descriptions of the impact of Aspergers on Cross detracted from the storyline.

A very different detective

Just discovered this author and I’m looking forward to listening to the next books in the series.
The narrator is very good, each character is clearly defined and he manages to show DS Cross’ unemotional state without making his voice boring.
A good story that kept me engaged to the end.

Entertaining but predictable

This was an entertaining whodunnit, but the ending was predictable.

John Heffernan has a pleasant voice, but there were some times I couldn’t tell which character was speaking, as he doesn’t always differentiate the voices. Otherwise I enjoyed his reading.

I’m autistic, like the main character, and, while it’s nice to read about an autistic detective, I didn’t always find the portrayal of autism believable. It felt like the author had done a lot of research, so we got far too many explanations of autistic traits, but it didn’t feel to me like he really empathised with George. Ironic since he tells us often that autistic people lack empathy!

I will read/listen to the sequels, because it was still entertaining and I’ll be interested to see if George feels more real in later books.

Well plotted, satisfying story

I enjoy crime fiction but have read/listened to many books with well-known detectives. George Cross’s personality & style of detection is different & Sullivan writes a compulsive read! The plotting made sense & provided some good twists. The narration was perfect for the book, appropriate accents & nothing overdone. I’ll be listening to the series .

Addictive

I have really enjoyed this series and The Dentist is no exception. I use my audio books while walking and find myself annoyed by traffic noise and the like. Hard to pause when I get home. I even find myself being a bit "DS Cross like" over the rest of the day. Sullivan's characters are real and complex. Highly recommended.
