A pilot goes down in the Sahara with eight days of water and an engine he cannot mend. On the first morning a small voice wakes him: a child, alone in the sand, a thousand miles from any inhabited region, asking very seriously for his sheep.

Over the days that follow the child tells him where he has come from. A tiny planet. Three volcanoes. One rose he loved badly and left behind. Six worlds crossed since, each with a grown-up on it, each certain he is being reasonable. And then the Earth, and a fox who asks to be tamed.

"Here is my secret. It is very simple: one sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eyes."

A new translation from the French, complete and unabridged: all 27 chapters

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Saint-Exupéry was an airman as well as a writer, and *The Little Prince* first appeared in New York in 1943, in French and in English together. In July 1944 he took off on a reconnaissance flight and did not come back; his aeroplane was lost off Marseille.
