Publisher's Summary

Richard Dawkins' brilliant reformulation of the theory of natural selection has the rare distinction of having provoked as much excitement and interest outside the scientific community as within it. His theories have helped change the whole nature of the study of social biology, and have forced thousands to rethink their beliefs about life.

In his internationally best-selling, now classic, volume, The Selfish Gene, Dawkins explains how the selfish gene can also be a subtle gene. The world of the selfish gene revolves around savage competition, ruthless exploitation, and deceit, and yet, Dawkins argues, acts of apparent altruism do exist in nature. Bees, for example, will commit suicide when they sting to protect the hive, and birds will risk their lives to warn the flock of an approaching hawk.

Critic Reviews

"Dawkins first book, The Selfish Gene, was a smash hit.... Best of all, Dawkins laid out this biology - some of it truly subtle - in stunningly lucid prose. (It is, in my view, the best work of popular science ever written.)" (H. Allen Orr, Professor of Biology, University of Rochester, in The New York Review of Books)

Informative but too long and detailed

Listening to book without much biology. Found the gist of the book informative and insightful but the book was too long. A lot of discussion related to game theory, probability needed by author to explain a point but got too boring. Had to skip some parts. Narrated well. The book could have been condensed to quite an extent. Insightful but too elaborate for me.

Darwinism Elaborated

So far the best explanation why the struggle between species; between individuals of same species; with paradoxically self sacrifying altruism among them.

Excellent simplification of a complicated subject

Very skillful explanation of Dawkin's ownsocio-biological understanding of Darwin's complicated theory of genetic evolution.

Good read

The book is more than 30 yrs old. and still relevant..decently. not something which many books can do in a dynamic field such as genes study.

Tough Read

Dawkins narration is pure music. But the content requires the reader to be already aware of the basics of genetics.

a blinding tour de force to understand evolution

I would feel after hearing this but that you have not really understood evolution if you have not read this book full of such original brilliant ideas that make Richard Dawkins one of the most original thinkers of the 20th century
