Jede verstandesmäßige Erkenntnis des Göttlichen sei lediglich eine Annäherung, so der Dominikanerpater. Für ihn war das Gewahrwerden des Schöpfers im Menschen ein Prozess, den er in vielen Bildern ausdrückte: Ein ins Feuer geworfenes Holz etwa werde langsam eins mit der Flamme, bis beides nicht mehr zu unterscheiden sei. Ein mystischer Vorgang. Dabei verstand es Meister Eckhart, seine Visionen von der Vereinigung zwischen Gott und Mensch zugleich philosophisch zu begründen und mit der Alltagswelt der Menschen zu verbinden.
