Publisher's Summary

All's faire in love and war for two sworn enemies who indulge in a harmless flirtation in a laugh-out-loud rom-com from debut author Jen DeLuca.

Emily knew there would be strings attached when she relocated to the small town of Willow Creek, Maryland, for the summer to help her sister recover from an accident, but who could anticipate getting roped into volunteering for the local Renaissance Faire alongside her teenaged niece? Or that the irritating and inscrutable schoolteacher in charge of the volunteers would be so annoying that she finds it impossible to stop thinking about him?

The faire is Simon's family legacy and from the start he makes clear he doesn't have time for Emily's lighthearted approach to life, her oddball Shakespeare conspiracy theories, or her endless suggestions for new acts to shake things up. Yet on the faire grounds he becomes a different person, flirting freely with Emily when she's in her revealing wench's costume. But is this attraction real, or just part of the characters they're portraying?

This summer was only ever supposed to be a pit stop on the way to somewhere else for Emily, but soon she can't seem to shake the fantasy of establishing something more with Simon or a permanent home of her own in Willow Creek.

ho hum

I didn't finish listening because the story was rather dull. It's a contrived setup for a typical romcom. I prefer less internal monologue and more punchy dialogue. I like characters with realistic personality quirks and character growth. The main character was too nice, too self-deprecating. Blah.

Rare reviewer

This book is ok. My issue is the girl's inner monolog. I get that she's insecure, but the world happening around her doesn't match her thoughts. The character comes off as unstable rather than insecure, but it's more than just that. It extends to the writers poor articulation. It can be distracting and frustrating. The story is cute though and had a lot of potential. I have a very similar problem to the authors'. My imagination is limited and my writing is stilted but I know what I want to say.

Steer me to the closest Ren Faire!

I enjoyed this book far more than I expected to. Not usually a romance fan, I loved the Renaisance Faire details and the snarky dialogue. The characters were likable and intelligent. In all, a very entertaining book and surprisingly well written.

Couldn't stop listening.

I loved the story, the vivid imagery of the author's words, and the narrator's storytelling. Can't wait for the next book.

Wishing I could be at the Ren Faire right now!

This book is fantastic. I’d already read it before I got the audiobook, but since I like to multitask I wanted it on here as well to be able to reread it while doing other stuff. I love the story, I just wish there were more because all of the characters are so fun I just want to spend more time with them all. I can’t wait for Well Played to come out. Overall this is a sweet read that will make you long for a summer day at the Renaissance faire and is a wonderful reprieve from the chaos in the world right now.

Of Mutton and Monotony

Okay. My title for this isn’t very fair.

I really adore the setup for this book, being a casual fan of Renaissance Faire. There’s a lot of opportunity for fun and shenanigans just in that setting alone, but you never get to experience it.

The book is entirely from Emily’s perspective and when she first meets local stick-in-the-mud Simon he’s perceived as hating her from the start. However, when their RennFaire starts it’s revealed he has a dashing pirate persona who flirts with her and shows a side of him she’d never would have guessed he possessed.

A really fun setup, but the writing felt very superficial. I never felt like I got to know any of the characters aside from superficial traits and it all would have benefited from deeper character interaction. It was also hard to root for Emily given that her internal dialogue would flip on a dime. I know she was supposed to be confused by Simon’s hot and cold nature, but almost everything that confounds her about him is something that could have been solved with a little critical thinking on her part. It got very frustrating to listen to her internal dialogue.

I feel bad because I really wanted to love this book, but it was just okay in the end. It was too light for my taste and just wish it had been more.

Cute Story, Excellent Narration

I’ve been enjoying cute contemporary romances lately. I’ve been to a couple of festivals and thought Emily and Simon’s adorable love story was a great lens into that world.

Enjoyable

I rather enjoyed listening to this book.. i go to a ren fest every year, so maybe that helps. I don't generally read or seem to care for the cheesy romantic comedys, but I found myself caught up in this one. I'm already looking forward to her next book in September of this year.

Main Character was great until the end

This story was cute and sweet until near the end and then the main character suddenly had no confidence and read into one thing someone said to the point it caused her extreme anxiety and never asked anyone about it until she was completely messed up about it. She has to be told she's wanted over and over, even when she's been told it multiple times

Second Read Through

This is the first time I’ve listened to the audiobook. I read the BOTM selection last year and absolutely loved the heck out of the book. It’s an all time favorite. REN-FAIRE ROMANCE!!!!

Up there with the Best!

I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to do so with this book. Absolutely loved the flow and the 'reality' of the storyline. The research and details of the Renaissance Fair easily transported me into their world and brought it all to life. It was so hard to have to stop listening to come back to reality as the narrator really brought all the characters to life. A read/listen you wont regret getting absorbed in. Will certainly be looking forward to more by this author 💖

Made me wish I could join a Ren Faire

I love the setting in this, it really comes to life as you read. The plot follows the classic formula, so if you've read a few romance novels you'll be able to tell what's going to happen, but I didn't really care. A very comfortable read with friendly characters.
