Story
It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever.

Publisher's Summary
One day, Callie Vanetta receives devastating news… She needs a liver transplant. But her doctors warn that, in her case, the chances of finding a compatible donor aren’t good. Determined to spend whatever time she has left on her own terms, she keeps the diagnosis to herself and moves out to her late grandparents’ farm. She’s always wanted to live there. But the farm hasn’t been worked in years and she begins to fear she can’t manage it, that she’ll have to return to town.
One night, a stranger comes knocking at her door… He’s an attractive and mysterious drifter by the name of Levi McCloud, and he offers to trade work for a few nights’ shelter. Callie figures she doesn’t have anything to lose. He needs a place to stay until he can fix his motorcycle; she needs an extra pair of hands. The arrangement seems ideal until what was supposed to be temporary starts to look more and more permanent. Then she realizes she does have something to lose - her heart. And, although he doesn’t yet know it, Levi stands to lose even more.

Great Read
When Summer Comes (Whiskey Creek, #3) was a great read by Brenda Novak. Callie finds out that she's sick and needs a liver transplant. She knows chances aren't good that she'll get the liver she needs, so she doesn't tell anyone she's close to. She wants to make the most of her time left and moves out to her grandparents farm. One night a stranger knocks on her door with bad injuries. Levi is a mysterious drifter who offers to work on repairing the farm for a few nights of shelter. Callie doesn't realize that she will wind up falling for Levi. I really enjoyed reading Callie and Levi's story and can't wait to read more by Brenda Novak.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, yes, yes
What other book might you compare When Summer Comes to and why?
not sure, but I have to give it to Brenda Novak her books are surprisingly good and there is so much content, her book covers don't do her books justice, that's how good they are.
What about Shannon McManus’s performance did you like?
she has a very pleasant voice.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
omg......when they finally gave in.

Amateur story from beginning to end.
What would have made When Summer Comes better?
Less stating of the obvious would have been great.
What could Brenda Novak have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Less predictability and more complex characters.
What didn’t you like about Shannon McManus’s performance?
Very little voice change from one character to the next. Also her reading was too slow.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. I enjoyed a couple of her other books which weren't my favorites but were certainly better than this one.
Any additional comments?
Don't waste your time.

Not bad, but some issues
What did you like best about When Summer Comes? What did you like least?
This is a series, and it kept sliding into other related stories, which seemed to be just for marketing - wanting you to buy the other books. But since you didn't know the other characters, it was just a bit baffling. The two main characters were more stereotyped than usual for a romance book. And, it was too long - lots of rambling and repetition.
What does Shannon McManus bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She is so natural, and her ability to personify the characters with differing voices is uncanny. Female and male alike. She really moved this book up several levels.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I love this series, this is the 3rd one in the series and it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time! I love how the author continues the stories of all of the characters in Whiskey Creek!

Great listen!
I didn't think I'd like this book and passed it over a number of times before downloading and am glad I did. Even though I'm a fan of Brenda Novak's the publisher's summary made this book sound too trite to be worth the credit. I finally capitulated and am glad I did. While heath issues are obviously present in the book they don't overpower the ultimate story and connection between Callie and Levi.

Nice sequel in the Whiskey Creek series!
Would you consider the audio edition of When Summer Comes to be better than the print version?
Yes, I think the audio edition brings life to both the book and series.
What was one of the most memorable moments of When Summer Comes?
When and how everyone finds out about the big secret.
What does Shannon McManus bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I think she is a good narrator.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Sort of. However, I enjoyed listening to it in multiple sittings.
Any additional comments?
Nice sequel. Worth the money.

Heartfelt Story
Any additional comments?
This story is about a vagrant veteran and a photographer who is deathly sick and desperately needs a liver transplant to survive. They both meet in a rather unconventional way and soon start to develop a romantic relationship. The characters from the other two books also make an appearance. Although this book was good it wasn't as good as the previous books. I look forward to reading future books from this series.
