    Scripture: Matthew 7:1–5, 12

““Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭1‬-‭5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭12‬ ‭NIV‬‬

True righteousness examines itself before it evaluates anyone else.

    1. We're wired to spot the speck in someone else and miss the plank in ourselves (7:3–5).
    2. The measure you hand out becomes the measure you receive (7:1–2).
    3. The Golden Rule is the practical exit ramp from this whole trap. "Do to others what you would have them do to you" (7:12) —

    Scripture: Matthew 6:19–24, 33

““Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭19‬-‭24‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭33‬ ‭NIV‬‬

What you treasure determines your peace.

    1. Your treasure reveals your true master. "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be" (Matthew 6:21)
    2. Divided treasure always produces anxiety.

““No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭24‬ ‭NIV)‬‬

    1. The right treasure, sought first, produces peace.

"Seek first the kingdom" (Matthew 6:33)

    The Heart Behind the Rule
    Matthew 5:21–26

Righteousness starts in the heart, long before it ever shows up in your behavior.

Counterculture = everyone else is doing life one way, and you’re doing it a totally different way on purpose. The way we live life is the Jesus Way!

    1. Check It.

The rule (law) was never the bar — the heart is. Never killing someone was never the win; contempt was already the fail (5:21–22).

    1. Trace It.

Same root, different scenario. Lust, revenge, broken promises — Jesus keeps pulling back the same curtain: it’s always a heart problem first (5:27–48).

    1. Fix It.

Being reconciled beats religious. God wants the relationship repaired more than the performance perfected — fix it before you worship, not after (5:23–24).

  • The Upside-Down Kingdom | Blessing
    Sep 13 2026

    Matthew 5:1–12 (Beatitudes)

The kingdom's definition of "blessed" is the exact opposite of culture's and it's actually better.

1 Culture's version of blessed is a moving target. Have it together. Get ahead. Get seen. It's comparative and exhausting — and it's a documented driver of rising anxiety among 18–34-year-olds.

2 Jesus names the opposite conditions as the doorway to blessing. Poor in spirit, mourning, meek, hungry for righteousness — everything culture calls weakness, Jesus calls the entry point.

3 This blessing is received, not achieved and it changes what you carry into the world. It's grace, available now, not a status you earn later.
