“I’m Just a Girlfriend”: Long Distance, Moving Solo & Building Snail Salutes with Ella Sweezey

This week on Details in Hindsight, I’m joined by military girlfriend Ella Sweezey, founder of Snail Salutes, a monthly letter subscription made for military significant others.

Ella and her boyfriend Logan met in ROTC and made it through 14 months of long distance. Just three months ago, she moved across the country to his first duty station. She did it on her own, paying her own way, without her furniture, and without being able to talk to him for the last two months. She shares what that first taste of military life really felt like (yes, including a popped air mattress) and why it made her realize she’s in it for the long haul.

    We also talk about:
💌 How long distance made their relationship “even more beautiful, more peaceful, and more strong”
🏡 Adjusting to living together after months of independent lives
🫶 Finding community as a girlfriend when you can’t get on base
✉️ The story behind Snail Salutes, from letters to Logan to 300+ milsos every month
💭 Imposter syndrome and the advice she’d give day-one business owner Ella
🌿 Her best advice for military girlfriends: stop waiting for the next chapter to be happy
👋 Tips for making friends after a move, even if you’re shy: “Do it scared.”

Whether you’re a girlfriend, fiancée, or spouse, this one is a reminder that your timeline is your own, and that you deserve to pour into yourself just as much as you pour into your service member.

  • PCSing to the Desert| EP 29
    Oct 13 2026

🎙️ Welcome to Episode 29 of Details in Hindsight! Maddy is back in the studio and finally sharing the story she’s tried to record about 30 times: the PCS that tested everything.

In this episode, Maddy walks through a double move from Georgia and Mississippi to New Mexico while recovering from ear surgery and sepsis. She covers:

    • Saying goodbye to her job, her doctors, and Stacy, her beloved first car
    • Using movers for the first time vs. a DIY move, and why good moving gear is worth it
    • What to pack in your car (RIP the tea kettle)
    • An honest review of TLF, from scratchy sheets to a dirt “dog park”
    • Choosing on base housing, and the frustrating wait for keys
    • A month and a half at her dad’s in Denver, a hit and run, and post-sepsis syndrome
    • Why starting therapy sooner would have made all the difference
    • Finally settling in and reintegrating after a year of long distance

If you’re in the middle of a hard PCS, this one’s for you. You’re not alone.

  • Military Spouse Commission Recap + The Changes I'm Fighting For | EP 28
    Oct 6 2026

I listened to the first Military Spouse Commission meeting so you don't have to. Here's the Cliff Notes version, plus what I want them to tackle next.

Created in August 2026, the Commission brings 20 military spouses from every branch to the White House each month. I break down what they covered on housing, employment, healthcare, and childcare.

Then I share the changes I'd like the Commission to address next: adding military spouses to the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, and real accountability for EFMP.

Not left or right, just making military spouse life better. Have a take? Let me know in the comments.
