“I’m Just a Girlfriend”: Long Distance, Moving Solo & Building Snail Salutes with Ella Sweezey
This week on Details in Hindsight, I’m joined by military girlfriend Ella Sweezey, founder of Snail Salutes, a monthly letter subscription made for military significant others.
Ella and her boyfriend Logan met in ROTC and made it through 14 months of long distance. Just three months ago, she moved across the country to his first duty station. She did it on her own, paying her own way, without her furniture, and without being able to talk to him for the last two months. She shares what that first taste of military life really felt like (yes, including a popped air mattress) and why it made her realize she’s in it for the long haul.
We also talk about:
💌 How long distance made their relationship “even more beautiful, more peaceful, and more strong”
🏡 Adjusting to living together after months of independent lives
🫶 Finding community as a girlfriend when you can’t get on base
✉️ The story behind Snail Salutes, from letters to Logan to 300+ milsos every month
💭 Imposter syndrome and the advice she’d give day-one business owner Ella
🌿 Her best advice for military girlfriends: stop waiting for the next chapter to be happy
👋 Tips for making friends after a move, even if you’re shy: “Do it scared.”
Whether you’re a girlfriend, fiancée, or spouse, this one is a reminder that your timeline is your own, and that you deserve to pour into yourself just as much as you pour into your service member.
