Jason Wilcox has become one of the most powerful figures at Manchester United — but after more than two years of INEOS rebuilding the club, how much responsibility should he take for what has gone wrong?

In this video, I’m examining Jason Wilcox’s Manchester United record from his appointment as Technical Director in April 2024 through to becoming Director of Football and one of the key architects of the current sporting project.

This isn’t simply about blaming one executive for every bad result. It’s about following the decisions.

United retained Erik ten Hag before sacking him months later. Ruben Amorim was then appointed despite the obvious difficulties of fitting his 3-4-2-1 system to the existing squad, backed in the transfer market and ultimately dismissed after refusing to move away from that philosophy. Dan Ashworth’s short spell at Old Trafford further changed the hierarchy and left Wilcox with even greater influence.

Recruitment has evolved too. United have moved towards younger, data-led targets, Premier League-proven players and a structure designed to reduce the manager’s control over transfers.

But after hundreds of millions spent, recurring squad-building problems remain.

From the midfield rebuild to the unresolved left-back situation, Michael Carrick’s difficult start and now the JJ Gabriel situation, we’re reaching the point where Manchester United’s performances increasingly reflect the football operation Wilcox helped construct.

In this Manchester United 2-3 Brighton reaction, I’m breaking down what went wrong, the biggest individual performances and what this defeat tells us about Michael Carrick’s Man United squad.

Cup games provide an opportunity to rotate, give fringe players meaningful minutes and allow younger players to prove they deserve a bigger role. But regardless of the starting XI, Manchester United should expect to compete at Old Trafford — and conceding three goals while crashing out of the Carabao Cup inevitably raises more questions.
