There will inevitably be scrutiny on Carrick, but responsibility also falls on the players and the wider football operation that constructed this squad. United need to find solutions quickly because draws like this can become extremely costly over a Premier League season.

It’s another game without a win — and another performance we need to properly unpack.

The Truth About Jason Wilcox at Manchester United

Jason Wilcox has become one of the most powerful figures at Manchester United — but after more than two years of INEOS rebuilding the club, how much responsibility should he take for what has gone wrong?

In this video, I’m examining Jason Wilcox’s Manchester United record from his appointment as Technical Director in April 2024 through to becoming Director of Football and one of the key architects of the current sporting project.

This isn’t simply about blaming one executive for every bad result. It’s about following the decisions.

United retained Erik ten Hag before sacking him months later. Ruben Amorim was then appointed despite the obvious difficulties of fitting his 3-4-2-1 system to the existing squad, backed in the transfer market and ultimately dismissed after refusing to move away from that philosophy. Dan Ashworth’s short spell at Old Trafford further changed the hierarchy and left Wilcox with even greater influence.

Recruitment has evolved too. United have moved towards younger, data-led targets, Premier League-proven players and a structure designed to reduce the manager’s control over transfers.

But after hundreds of millions spent, recurring squad-building problems remain.

From the midfield rebuild to the unresolved left-back situation, Michael Carrick’s difficult start and now the JJ Gabriel situation, we’re reaching the point where Manchester United’s performances increasingly reflect the football operation Wilcox helped construct.

Manchester United are up and running in the Champions League with a convincing 4-0 victory over Sabah at Old Trafford.

In this post-match analysis, I’m breaking down what we actually learned from Man United 4-0 Sabah, looking beyond the scoreline at the individual performances, Michael Carrick’s tactical decisions and what this tells us about the development of his Manchester United side.

United were expected to win this game comfortably, so the result itself isn’t necessarily the biggest story. The more important question is how United approached a game where they were responsible for dominating possession, breaking down a deeper defensive structure and creating chances against a team happy to sit behind the ball.

It also gave Carrick an opportunity to manage his squad, give minutes to different players and build confidence ahead of a much bigger test against Manchester City in the Premier League.

In this video, I’m breaking down what we REALLY learned from Everton 2-2 Manchester United, looking beyond the scoreline at the biggest positives, concerns and tactical questions facing Michael Carrick after another revealing Premier League performance.

The midfield battle was always going to be crucial. Everton provided the physical test we expected, challenging United for second balls, aerial duels and control of the middle of the pitch. For Carrick, this was another opportunity to see whether his rebuilt Manchester United midfield can cope with the intensity and physicality required away from home in the Premier League.

But there are bigger questions too.

How much progress are we actually seeing under Michael Carrick? Is the balance of this Manchester United team right? Which players are establishing themselves as guaranteed starters — and where are the weaknesses that opposition teams will continue trying to exploit?

With the Manchester Derby against Man City coming next, there’s very little time to fix those problems.

Manchester United travel to Everton on Sunday looking to build momentum after the 5-2 win over Ipswich — but this could be a very different test for Michael Carrick’s side.

In this Everton vs Manchester United preview, I’m looking at where the game could be won and lost, the key tactical battles and the changes Carrick could make to his Man United starting XI.

One of my biggest concerns is the physical battle. Everton can make games incredibly uncomfortable, so United’s ability to compete for aerial duels, second balls and set pieces could be crucial. After some of the defensive vulnerabilities we’ve already seen this season, this should tell us plenty about the resilience of Carrick’s new-look team.

Then there’s the midfield.

Manchester United have invested heavily in rebuilding that area, but this is exactly the type of Premier League away game where that new midfield needs to prove itself. Can United control possession without being bullied physically? How important will Carlos Baleba’s athleticism become? And who should Carrick select alongside him to give United the right balance?

With the Manchester Derby coming next, getting another three points would give United some vital early-season momentum.
