For many readers and theologians, the Old and New Testaments (Tanach and the Christian bible) feel disconnected. It’s something that has been an element driving replacement theology. They may be full of inspiration and meaning, but viewed as parallel, and often unrelated. Or, for some, the original replaced by and no longer significant. The writers of the New Testament were all observant Jews so many hints and references in their writing have clear connection to the Tanach which was the only bible they new and studied. The Echoes Bible is a new project, based on the realization that below the surface, careful investigation reveals when you read them side by side, the begin to hear “echoes” from the Old to the New. This is a groundbreaking revelation that has the ability to add dimension and meaning, as well as underscore the truth that Christianity is rooted in Judaism, something that many are still not aware of, and which still needs emphasis.

Almost 100 years since the founding of the Moslem Brotherhood, it remains one of the most influential Islamist movements in the Middle East, and one of the most dangerous in the world. Several Arab countries have banned the Brotherhood, yet they remain an existential threat. Most recently the US has banned three of its chapters, but much more needs to be done. Qatar and Turkey, two countries that have not only NOT banned the Brotherhood, but which are state outposts whose leaders and institutions embrace its ideology have not been banned. Recently, the “Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches in Jerusalem” issued a joint statement explicitly condemning Christian Zionism as a harmful and damaging ideology. Their statement accuses local individuals who promote it of misleading public opinion, sowing confusion, and undermining the unity of the Church. The statement further states, “The Patriarchs and Heads of Churches further note with concern that these individuals have been welcomed at official levels both locally and internationally.” It's ironic that days earlier, Christian leaders throughout Israel were welcomed and celebrated by Israel’s head of state, President Herzog, at the President’s residence, hosted with honor and respect. Does this statement poke the president in the eye, and undermine the very existence of the State of Israel? Is Christian Zionism harmful and damaging? What is the theological basis of such a declaration? Why are there so many Christians who embrace Zionism, from the 19th century? Why was the statement issued now, and who is behind it? What does it mean that Zionism was singled out as problematic, but Israel was not mentioned once?

It’s hard to think about much less say, but sometimes the greatest inspiration and insight can come from the greatest tragedy and loss. That’s the case with Rabbi Leo Dee, whose wife and two daughters were murdered on April 7, 2023, in a Hamas terrorist attack.
