    North Mason track and field opened the Olympic League Championships yesterday at Phil Pugh Stadium in Belfair, with Samantha Neal winning the girls' pole vault, Owen Dukeshire taking second in the boys' discus, and the girls' 4x100 relay finishing third. North Mason baseball closed the regular season Thursday with an 11-4 win over Chimacum, finishing 9-11 and earning the 12th seed in the District 3 Class 2A tournament. Shelton baseball wrapped up the regular season with an 11-4 loss to Tumwater, finishing 12-9 on the year.

    Today: Shelton baseball heads to the District 4 Class 3A tournament play-in game Saturday against Heritage, and FC Olympia opens its season this weekend with a doubleheader tomorrow at The RAC in Lacey.

    • The race for Mason County Commissioner District 3 now has six candidates after Shelton City Councilmember Eric Inesko filed with GOP as his preferred party, while incumbents Patty McLean (Assessor), Jamie Taylor (Coroner), and Michael Dorsey (Prosecutor) all filed yesterday to retain their seats.
    • A structure fire at a home on the 1500 block of Fairmont Avenue in the Hillcrest neighborhood was knocked down in about 10 minutes by Central Mason Fire and EMS with mutual aid from South Mason, with one person transported to Mason General Hospital for possible smoke inhalation.
    • Mason County's unemployment rate dropped to 5.8 percent in March, down four-tenths of a point from February's revised rate of 6.2 percent, according to the state Employment Security Department.

North Mason's Briley Beal won the girls 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best 15.55 and took third in the 100 meters, while the Bulldogs boys 4x200 relay team of McFarland, Murphy, Butler, and Dunham took first. Shelton's Claire Warnock placed second in both girls hurdle events. In softball, North Mason beat Orting 9-5 behind home runs from Taylor Madison and Sidney Immolay and 10 strikeouts from pitcher Addison Roy. North Mason baseball fell to Fife 7-2.

    Today: golf, tennis, softball, baseball, and soccer across the county. Black Hills visits Shelton for both softball and baseball at 4:30, with the softball game airing live on Mason Web TV.
