Peter explains that the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion covers universities but extends to all antisemitic activity affecting Jewish and non-Jewish communities. He calls it the most significant event in Australian Jewish history, with audiences including non-Jewish Australians, government, and international Jewish communities — and expresses confidence that its recommendations could reduce antisemitism to pre-October 2023 levels. Morry Frenkel speaks with Moshe Denburg, founder and band leader of Tzimmes, a Vancouver-based Jewish world-music ensemble whose music includes songs in Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, and English. Moshe talks about the influences on his musical development, including his parents - modern Orthodox Rabbi Chaim Denburg, and singer Miriam Ben-Ezra - and living and studying in the USA, Israel, India and Japan. Moshe describes the 2-disc CD, The Road Never Travelled, with one disc featuring original and interpretations of liturgical songs, with the other having a mix of Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino and English tracks. Moshe also discusses his founding in 2001 of the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra, one of the first concert orchestras in the world devoted specifically to performing new intercultural music on a grand scale. Morry Frenkel speaks with Melinda Jones, the Immediate Past President of the National Council of Jewish Women Australia and a recognised expert on freedom of speech and racial hatred, about her belief that certain phrases being used in the public domain should be prohibited and the reasons for such action. She explains why ‘globalise the intifada’ and ‘genocide’ fit into this category. Melinda also describes how a number of antisemitic incidents she suffered had influenced her to view antisemitism from a different perspective: as the inability to act as an ordinary Australian citizen and to feel the need to change behaviours in order to go about normal daily activities. Melinda’s submission to the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion includes the need for the Commission to recognise that institutes authorising the public display of antisemitic material must be regulated.
