  • EP. 98 | The Books Every Catholic Should Read
    May 30 2026

Do you know you should be reading more, but never quite get started? In this meditation, Fr Gavan draws on Pope Leo's recent call to read, exploring how the right books can help us think more clearly, connect more deeply with others, and grow closer to God. He walks through which books to prioritise, from the Gospels to the great spiritual classics, and why some books can actually damage our faith. A simple and practical encouragement to build a reading habit that feeds your soul, ten minutes at a time.

  • Ep. 97 | The Mental Diet Starving Your Soul
    May 23 2026

Are you living on a diet of headlines and quick scrolls? In this meditation, Fr Gavan reflects on Pope Leo's recent call to read more books, and the three reasons behind it. Reading nourishes the mind, lets us meet others through their stories, and forms the heart through spiritual writing. A simple invitation to start feeding the mind properly, one chapter at a time.

  • Ep. 96 | Why You Can't Find Peace
    May 16 2026

When you watch the news, do the wars in the world feel oddly familiar inside you? In this episode, Fr Gavan traces the conflicts we see around us back to the smaller war within each human heart, the pull of competing desires that leaves us divided against ourselves. Drawing on Scripture and the wisdom of Augustine and Aquinas, he shows that the peace Christ gives is not a feeling we can manufacture but a gift that orders the soul, so love of God comes first and everything else falls into its proper place. If your inner life feels at war, this is an invitation to ask Christ for the peace only he can give, and to begin carrying it to the people around you.

  • Ep. 95 | Why Mary Is the Sign of Hope
    May 9 2026

Do you ever feel like the hard season you're in will never end? In this episode, Fr Gavan turns to Our Lady as the great sign of hope the Church gives us, especially in May. Drawing on the Song of Songs and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux's famous homily, he shows why Mary is called the Morning Star, and why turning to her is the right move when life feels like a storm. Take this as an invitation to give Mary a little more of your time this month, and to let her point you toward the dawn.

  • Ep. 94 | What Are We Made For?
    May 2 2026

Have you ever noticed that the most beautiful moments in life carry a strange ache with them? In this meditation, Fr Gavan draws on Saint Augustine, Teresa of Avila, Saint Paul, and the Irish poet Paul Pierce to explain why the joys of this life are meant to make us a little homesick for heaven. Eastertide, he shows, is a season of foretastes: spring, the people we love, and above all the Eucharist are small sneak previews of a joy that no eye has seen and no heart has yet conceived. A simple invitation to let the beauty around you point you home.

  • Ep. 93 | Why Holiness Feels So Hard
    Apr 25 2026

Why do we keep doing the very things we don't want to do? Saint Paul asked the same question, and so does every one of us. In this meditation, Fr Gavan explores the Church's answer: original sin, the seed that tilts us toward what we most regret. Drawing on Paul's letter to the Romans, a striking scene from The Thin Red Line, and the hidden struggles of Peter, Augustine, Jerome, Teresa of Avila, and Francis de Sales (who once dug his fingernails into the underside of a desk to stay calm), he offers three pieces of good news: we can improve, every saint fought the same fight, and our very struggle is what teaches us humility. A gentle reminder that holiness is always hard won, and that your struggle is not a sign something is wrong with you. It is the path.

  • Ep. 92 | Living Charity in Daily Life
    Apr 11 2026

Do you ever think about what it’s like for other people to be around you? In this meditation, Fr Gavan reflects on the life of the apostles after the Resurrection, and how they lived closely together, trying to recreate something of the presence of Christ among them. From this, he draws a simple and practical question: how do we make life better for the people around us? Looking at the example of Christ, he points to four concrete ways we can do this: giving our time, showing affection, being considerate in how we speak and act, and bringing a spirit of cheerfulness into our daily interactions. These are simple things, but they make a real difference. If you want to grow in charity in a practical way, this is an invitation to begin with what is right in front of you.

  • Ep. 91 | Jesus Is Calling You (Will You Follow?)
    Apr 4 2026

Do you ever feel like following God is something you have to do, rather than something you freely choose? In this meditation, Fr Gavan reflects on the meaning of Easter as a new creation, and what it means to live with the “glorious freedom of the children of God.” God does not force us. He does not want slaves or people acting out of fear, but sons and daughters who choose Him freely. Drawing on the parable of the talents, he shows that this freedom comes with responsibility. Each of us has been given something, and the question is what we are doing with it. Are we using what God has given us, or are we holding back? If you’ve ever struggled to see your faith as something freely chosen rather than imposed, this is an invitation to rediscover that freedom, and to begin using it well.
