  • Chapter 4: No More Chances
    May 13 2023
The eating disorders charity Beat has said that in the UK alone there are around 1.25 million people suffering with an eating disorder. Eating disorders are treatable, and people can and do make full and sustained recoveries. The more awareness has been raised about them the more people are seeking treatment. But in AA’s case things took a serious turn. She’d go in to a unit, be nursed back to a target level and released only to struggle on the outside and end up right back where she started. This pattern continued with her in and out of the units constantly. In the space of 36 months she would be in the unit for 31 of them. Something had to give.

In the 20 or so years that AA was living with her condition she got to see and witness a great deal in terms of the UK health system. In some places it was a comforting and safe experience. At other times it was not. She would visit many different specialist units all with their own unique facilities. She would travel the length and breadth of the UK in the hope of finding a place which would suit her and aid her recovery. When it came to it though sometimes there was very little choice. You just had to take what you could get. It’s this that we discuss in Chapter 3: A Second Home.
