• Podcast Episode: The Entrepreneurial Mindset
    Sep 21 2022

I remember when I first met Demilade at a Masterclass for Entrepreneurial Leadership at the African Leadership University, In Kigali, Rwanda in 2019. I distinctly remember how he captivated us with the new approaches to teaching and learning he had put in place and how they went about accrediting such. Then we went on to discuss furthering entrepreneurship on the continent over lunch and at a local Mexican restaurant. That’s right “Mexican” in Kigali. It goes to show that some times you don’t have to live at the origin or right by the source. However, with an entrepreneurial mindset, you can take what you love about the world and bring parts of it home with you, where you deem home to be. Like the amazing Mexican food, I tasted in Kigali. I love to think that our catch-up over this episode will take you on a journey on how you, just like Demilade can find a home away from home. Share it, spread it and let it resonate.

  • Podcast Episode: Bringing in Humor to Positively Impact Your Mental Health
    Sep 27 2021
We are Back! We took a short break after ending the first season of our podcast. Welcome to Season 2 of the Noggin Notes Africa Podcast!   We begin this season with an incredible individual!   Joe van den berg, he is a 32 year old entrepreneur, DJ , comedian and a good human.   Since a young age he has always been interested in the algorithm that makes people laugh. He believes it's the best medicine.   If he could take you out of a bad space for a brief moment, it would be his ultimate goal. Our world needs more compassion and kindness.   Joe was obese as a kid, (106 kilos as a 14 year old)   Which he believe definitely affected his mental well being.   He came to a point where he needed to look inward and reflect on what was important to him and what he wanted to achieve with his time on earth. Being overweight as a kid wasn't doing it for him.   Health, Wealth, Time and happiness was what Joe needed to have a prosperous life here. Without one of those you can't fully enjoy your life and that's what his objectives to achieve became.   Joe sys "Life is a gift. it's not always wrapped in a golden ribbon. But it's what you make of the hand you are dealt and I can confidently say I have made the most of it."   Mental health especially amongst men is not talked about. We're told to "man up" or put our feelings on the back seat. Your brain is an organ that can get sick like any other organ in your body.   We need to realise that and check in with our feelings. Check your own star player. There are many contributing factors that I've learnt that work in conjunction with your mental health and overall well being is diet, exercise, positive thoughts and a purpose.

  • Podcast Episode: What Does Mental Illness Mean To Africans?
    Jul 26 2021
The scarcity of research mirrors the weakness of mental health services on the continent and the blind eye turned to the problem by many Africans and their governments.   Worldwide, 24% of countries that reported to the WHO's 2014 Mental Health Atlas survey did not have or had not implemented standalone mental health policies; in Africa, this proportion rose to 46%. The region has 1·4 mental health workers per 100 000 people, compared with a global average of 9·0 per 100 000, and also performs relatively poorly with regard to the number of psychiatrists, the number of hospital beds for patients with mental illness, and the coverage of outpatient facilities.   Partly as a consequence, the proportion of Africans who receive treatment for mental health problems is extremely low. While the global annual rate of visits to mental health outpatient facilities is 1051 per 100 000 population, in Africa the rate is 14 per 100 000. In Sierra Leone, for example, the treatment gap (that is, the proportion of those in need who go untreated) for formal mental health services has been estimated at 98·8%.   We welcome Keletso Motsage. She is a Therapist who works with the Botswana Network for Mental Health to equip and empower individuals and companies in the realms of Psychology, Workplace Mental Health and all round effectiveness, on organizational and individual levels.   After working with individuals on personal and corporate levels, Keletso Motsage knows how to guide and redirect thinking and perspectives to yield impactful results. It’s about connecting to what makes people tick, what motivates them, what affects them and guiding them to resolutions in order to optimize their functioning and enhance their life experiences.   Keletso Motsage has worked in clinical settings as a Counsellor at Sbrana Psychiatric Hospital in Lobatse, Botswana and The Pain Clinic in Gaborone, Botswana. She has also worked in a corporate setting as a Human Resources Officer at Cleanico, in Gaborone, Botswana. Working in these spaces has given her insight in the human element and efficiency in the workplace.   Keletso Motsage holds an Honours Degree in Psychology from The Nelson Mandela University, located in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

  • Podcast Episode: Striving to Live a Life of Service
    Jul 5 2021
When you picture “the good life,” what comes to mind? Is it landing a book deal, having a big house, lots of travel? The word “service” doesn’t often come to mind for most. Which is not surprising as we are not taught to revere the idea. In fact, some are given “community service” as a punishment for a crime.   We are taught instead that achievements and acquisitions are the definitions of a successful existence, but these are only nurturing to the ego. Instead, a life of service is the highest level of achievement for which one can strive, especially if one is interested in their own happiness.   Everyone is looking for direction in life. Some of the luckiest have a true calling (or callings, really they come in a series). Nature will give us assignments based on our capability and level of awareness. When you bring your awareness out of your small self or ego (the wave of self) and bring it into the Big Self (or ocean of self), your larger nature will point you in the right direction. This is where meditation comes in.   It lets us hear that inner voice that is often a set of instructions. The more closely you follow those intuitive instructions, the more complicated and bigger assignments you will get. Meditation also is the tool for finding fulfillment within. When you no longer need to look outside for happiness, you will feel compelled to bring your fulfillment to others. Your life becomes one of service from that point on.   We are joined by an incredible individual who shared is life with us and his quest in life.   Allan J. "Alonzo" Wind is a retired Senior Foreign Service Officer from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), having worked on and off with the Agency primarily overseas on diplomatic assignments from 1990 to 1992 and 1999 to 2019 in the Peru, Nicaragua, Angola, Nigeria, Iraq, Afghanistan and South Africa and the Southern Africa USAID Regional Missions. He provided oversight to U.S. government foreign aid development and humanitarian assistance, and supported U.S. Ambassadors as their senior development officer on multiple U.S. Embassy Country Teams.   In South Africa he helped establish the Southern Africa Regional Leadership Center as part of President Obama’s Young African Leadership Initiative, and contributed to other youth development efforts and business incubators.   He previously worked as the Global Programme Coordinator for the International Save the Children Alliance Secretariat and as a Country Director and Health Sector Coordinator for different nonprofit private voluntary organizations including CARE and PLAN International in a range of countries including Ecuador, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic and the United Kingdom.
