Trevor Hubbs – Outdoor Feast Podcast EP:029

On this episode of the Outdoor Feast Podcast, Todd talks with Trevor Hubbs. Trevor is the director of the Armed Forces Initiative with Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. He is fresh off a trip to the Boundary Waters with a group of service members from this organization. The vision of the Armed Forces Initiative is “to provide members of the Military community with the knowledge, experience, and passion needed to be fully operational as hunters and anglers in the forest, on the water, and as conservation stewards for habitat and wildlife as engaged advocates in the legislative process”. Many of the members of BHA have a military background. Bringing this subsection of the membership together to collectively explore and fight for wildlife and wild places has been a big success. Make sure to listen in as Trevor gives us a better picture of what this program is and all of the good it has accomplished.

Outdoor Writer, Kristen Schmitt – Outdoor Feast Podcast EP:026

On this episode of the Outdoor Feast Podcast, Todd Waldron has a great conversation with Kristen Schmitt. Kristen is an author by trade but it has not always been that way. She started, like many, in corporate America. After working in this setting for many years she and her husband decided they had enough and they moved from Detroit, Michigan to a rural Vermont home. One driver of this change was the desire to achieve a lifestyle focused more on the outdoors. She wanted to eat more naturally and to have a better connection with where her food comes from. This was so important to her that she even started raising her own chickens and buying meat from a butcher that lives next door.

In today’s podcast Kristen also discusses her journey to becoming a writer. It didn’t come easy for her. Writing used to just be a hobby of hers but with the support of her family and an adventurous spirit she worked hard to become the writer she is today. Now writing is her full-time job. She has been published in many notable journals and magazines. Check out Kristen Schmitt’s amazing work on her website. Please listen in to the Outdoor Feast Podcast for an in-depth discussion on books, food, and the many challenges of getting outdoors with children. This was definitely a fun conversation.

Connection to the Land – Outdoor Feast Podcast EP:025

During this conversation on the Outdoor Feast Podcast Todd has a chat with Katie Fernholz. Katie is the CEO of Dovetail Partners. They are a consulting firm around responsible land and forest management. One of their focuses is how we connect to the land and why that is so important. They discuss the intersection between hunting/fishing and responsible land management. Katie Fernholz was born and currently live in Minnesota. Her early days on a Minnesota farm led to her connection with the land. These early connections really started her on the path to where she is now as a thought leader and advocate in land management. She is a forester by training. Between connection to nature and her education as a forester, she has solidified her place as one of the leading minds in land management.

Hunting Maine with Brent West – Outdoor Feast Podcast EP:23

On this episode of the Outdoor Feast Podcast, Todd sits down with Brent West. Brent is the executive director of the High Peaks Alliance and a proud resident of Maine. The High Peaks Alliance is a volunteer, non-profit organization founded in 2007 and made up of outdoor lovers of all types. The Alliance comes from many different backgrounds, hunters and non-hunters alike. In general, their main goal is to work together to ensure public access in the High Peaks region of Maine. Maine has a remarkable 17 million acres of forest. Previously, much of this land was private ground open for public access. However, this access has been limited recently due to the land owners finding upkeep and maintenance with public use to be too big a task. For this reason, Brent and the High Peak Alliance are working hard to open this land back up for public use.

Todd and Brent start by talking about Brent’s background growing up and how it shaped his career. According to Brent, there are many great upland bird hunting opportunities in Maine. However, not many people are aware of this. But Brent is no stranger to sharing them with those who want to learn. Brent was recently featured on an episode of “Cal’s Week in the Field” by MeatEater. During this episode Brent shares with Cal the wonders of Maine Woodcock and Grouse hunting. You can watch that episode HERE.
