At #ILTACON2026, Tim Kenney sat down with Andrew Hutchinson, Founder of Rebel.Group, to talk acquisitions, AI hype and what law firms actually need.

After more than 20 years in legal tech, Hutch has seen the same pattern play out again and again: companies get acquired, founders move on, and the people with the passion and deep product knowledge disappear with them.

And on AI? Hutch isnโ€™t buying all the hype.

They also get into whether AI will really reduce legal spend, whether todayโ€™s valuations make sense, and why better data could completely change pricing and how firms resource matters.

Ahead of the Centre for Legal Innovation 2026 APAC Summit, David Woolstencroft sat down with Alison Laird, Director at the Centre for Legal Innovation, for a preview of whatโ€™s coming on 19โ€“20 October in Sydney.

    Alison shared some early findings from CLIโ€™s Future of Law research, including a pretty striking gap: ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฒ% ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—”๐—œ, ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—น๐˜† ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿต% ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜† ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ฎ๐—น ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€.

They also talked about whatโ€™s really getting in the way of transformation, the skills lawyers will need next, how the traditional career path may start shifting, and why the summit is designed to get people beyond talking about change and into actually building what comes next.

At #ILTACON2026, Tim Kenney sat down with Robert Martorana from Theo Ai and Pamela Fehring (JD, CIPP/US), an ๐—”๐—œ ๐—˜๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜, ๐—š๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ & ๐—˜๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜€ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ, to talk about litigation defence intelligence and why the corporate legal side has been somewhat overlooked in the AI rush.

When Theo AI spoke with in-house legal teams, one answer kept coming back: many were still managing litigation portfolios through spreadsheets, pulling information manually from billing systems, document management systems and other sources.

Theo AI takes a different approach, bringing that information together so legal teams can see not just one matter, but their ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ผ in one place. • Heath Harris on Applied AI, Legal Transformation & What Firms Should Do Next | ILTACON 2026

At #ILTACON2026, David sat down with Heath Harris, MBA, VP, Applied AI, Enterprise Transformation at NetDocuments, to talk about what AI transformation actually looks like inside a law firm.

Heath works with firms around the world on designing and implementing AI strategies, then brings those lessons back into product development at NetDocuments.

One thing that stood out was his approach to AI investment. Rather than starting with the product, start with the activity.

    - What do you need for workflow?

    - Search?

    - A chat assistant?

    - And how do you deploy those capabilities responsibly without buying five tools that solve the same problem?

They also talked about NetDocumentsโ€™ work with Google Gemini and Legora, the role of MCP, and the growing challenge for firms around governance, security and avoiding a โ€œshadow DMSโ€ as more AI tools enter the business.

And perhaps the most useful message for firms feeling behind:

    ๐—ž๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด. ๐—ž๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด.

You donโ€™t need to have everything figured out today. Progress matters more than chasing every new thing that appears.

๐Ÿ’ก A great conversation about cutting through the AI noise and focusing on what is actually practical.

At #ILTACON2026, Tim Kenney sat down with Alex Smith, Global Product Lead, Knowledge, Search & AI at iManage, to talk about what legal AI needs in order to become genuinely useful inside firms.

They also got into what iManage calls its โ€œ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜…๐˜ ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐโ€, a structured layer designed to connect matter, client, people and document information so AI can find the right things with much more precision.

From there, the conversation moved into ๐— ๐—–๐—ฃ, ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€, ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ต, and how firms may start moving from individual AI tasks into more connected workflows and processes.

One thing I liked was Alexโ€™s caution around the โ€œagentโ€ conversation. Weโ€™re not at the point where someone presses a button and an entire matter runs itself, but we are getting much closer to chaining tasks together in a more intelligent way.

  • Mathew Kerbis on the Billable Hour, Alternative Fees & Legal AI | ILTACON 2026
    Oct 5 2026

At #ILTACON2026, Tim Kenney sat down with Mathew Kerbis, Co-Founder and CEO of Practi, to talk about one of legalโ€™s longest-running headaches: the billable hour.

Practi is taking a different approach, focusing on ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ณ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜-๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด, with the idea that firms should be rewarded for getting work done faster, not for taking longer.

    Mathew put it simply:

    โ€œ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜†.โ€

If AI helps lawyers work faster and handle more matters, the commercial model needs to keep up. Instead of measuring success by hours billed, firms can start thinking about efficiency, margin and how much more value they can deliver.

Practi is only eight months into market and already has 80+ firms on the platform, making ILTACON its first major exhibition opportunity.

A really interesting conversation about what happens when you start separating ๐˜๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—บ ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜‚๐—ฒ in legal.

They discuss how the AI conversation has moved from โ€œshould we?โ€ to โ€œwhatโ€™s next?โ€, why more COOs and managing partners are getting involved in technology decisions, and how AI is starting to reshape everything from client service and pricing to law firm operations.

The conversation also explores the economics of AI, changing law firm business models, vendor consolidation, build vs buy, and the new roles emerging as legal, technology and operations become increasingly connected.

Joy also shares her advice for first-time ILTACON attendees: donโ€™t try to do everything. Choose the conversations, sessions and connections that will give you the most value.

  • Joe Rayment on Specialist Legal AI, Consolidation & What’s Next | ILTACON 2026
    Oct 1 2026

Can one AI platform really do everything in legal?

At ILTACON 2026, Tim Kenney sat down with Joe Rayment, Founder & CEO of Cicero, to talk about specialist legal AI, where the market is heading, and whatโ€™s changed after a few intense years of building in the space.

Cicero is built for litigators, helping teams analyse matters and get to the facts that matter faster.

What stood out was Joeโ€™s view that the market is starting to validate the need for more specialised tools. The big AI platforms are powerful, but theyโ€™re not going to solve every legal workflow equally well.

Looking ahead, Joe expects two things: more consolidation across legal tech, and much bigger moves into legal from the major AI players.
