  • To Go Bag Workshop
    Sep 6 2025

    Bug out bags

There are various types of "bug out" bags, each designed for specific emergency situations. Here are four primary types:

A Get Home Bag (GHB) is intended to help you return home safely during an emergency. It typically contains essentials needed for a short journey, such as water, food, first aid supplies, and navigation tools. This bag is often kept in your vehicle or workplace, allowing for quick access when needed.

A Go Bag is similar to a Bug Out Bag but is usually more compact and intended for shorter-term emergencies. It’s designed for quick escapes from home or work when immediate evacuation is necessary. The Go Bag typically includes essentials that can support you for a few days rather than a week. Items might include lightweight food options, basic first aid supplies, a change of clothes, and important documents. The emphasis here is on portability and speed.

The Bug Out Bag is a more comprehensive kit designed for longer-term survival away from home. It includes a wider range of gear, such as shelter materials, cooking equipment, and additional food supplies, to sustain you for several days (often 72 hours or more). This bag is crucial for evacuating in the face of significant threats like natural disasters or civil unrest

The Bug Out Bag is designed for situations where you need to evacuate your home quickly and sustain yourself for an extended period, typically up to a week. This bag is larger and heavier than others, often weighing around 40 pounds (15 kg), and contains essential supplies such as food, water, first aid kits, clothing, shelter materials, tools for protection, and communication devices. The goal is to provide everything necessary to survive in the wilderness or in an emergency situation until you reach a safe location.

Similar to a Bug Out Bag, the 72-Hour Kit is specifically designed to provide essential supplies for three days. It focuses on immediate survival needs, including food, water, and medical supplies. This kit is ideal for short-term emergencies where you may need to evacuate quickly but plan to return home soon after.

A 72-Hour Kit is specifically tailored to provide enough supplies to last three days during an emergency situation. This kit focuses on immediate needs such as food, water, first aid supplies, and hygiene products. It’s ideal for natural disasters or scenarios where you may be displaced temporarily but expect to return home within a short timeframe. The contents are similar to those found in Bug Out Bags but are streamlined for brevity.

    1. Get Home Bag2. Bug Out Bag (BOB)3. 72-Hour Kit4. INCH Bag (I'm Never Coming Home)An INCH Bag is meant for extreme scenarios where you may not be able to return home for an extended period or indefinitely. This type of bag contains supplies and gear necessary for long-term survival and self-sufficiency, including advanced tools, food reserves, and protective equipment. These bags serve different purposes but share the common goal of preparing individuals for emergencies by ensuring they have the necessary resources to survive and navigate challenging situations.

  • Breaking Down Barriers: The Food Security Crisis Facing Dayton's Black Community
    Aug 28 2025

To understand today's food crisis, we need to look back at how we got here. Redlining—the discriminatory practice of denying services to residents based on their neighborhood's racial composition—didn't just affect housing. It shaped entire food landscapes. In Dayton, these historically disinvested Black neighborhoods became what activists now call "food apartheid zones"—areas systematically deprived of access to fresh, affordable, nutritious food.

The numbers tell a stark story. Approximately one in four children in the Dayton area experiences food insecurity. But behind these statistics are real families making impossible choices: pay the electric bill or buy fresh vegetables? Fill up the gas tank to get to work or drive across town to the nearest full-service grocery store?

For many Black families, the nearest sources of food are corner stores stocked with processed foods and fast-food restaurants. This reality contributes to higher rates of diet-related diseases including diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease in the Black community—health disparities that reflect not individual choices, but structural inequalities.

  • The Introduction: How to Survive a Heatwave in the Hood
    Jul 24 2025

Climate change is making extreme heat events more frequent and more deadly, particularly in underserved communities with limited resources.

I'm proud to announce the release of "How to Survive a Heatwave in the Hood" - a practical survival guide that addresses the real challenges faced by urban communities during extreme weather events.

Heatwaves don’t hit the same for everybody.

If you live in the hood, you already know—when summer turns up, it’s more than just sweating through your shirt. It’s blackouts in the projects because the grid can’t handle the demand. It’s asphalt and concrete trapping heat like an oven, making your block 10 degrees hotter than the suburbs. It’s no AC because the landlord won’t fix the unit, or the electric bill is too high. And when the wet-bulb temps rise (that deadly mix of heat + humidity), people start dying —disproportionately Black, Brown, poor, and elderly.

This isn’t just about comfort. This is about survival.

  • The Crisis Impacting Family Farms and the Threat to the American Food Supply
    Jul 4 2025

The crisis facing American family farms is not just a rural issue—it is a national one, with implications for the economy, mental health, and the security of the food supply. Without targeted policy interventions to support family farmers, address land succession, and reform trade and agricultural policies, the decline is likely to continue, with consequences that extend far beyond the farm gate.

I sit down with Brian Reisinger, author of Land Rich, Cash Poor , to discuss the disappearing American farmer, the impact of tariffs, immigrant deportation, debt, and the increasing suicide rate among farmers.

  • Digital Racism: The Battle for Historical Truth
    May 2 2025

In today's digital age, the proliferation of online platforms has transformed how we communicate and share information. However, this shift has also given rise to a troubling phenomenon: digital racism. This form of racism manifests through the spread of harmful narratives and misinformation that distort historical truths about race and racism. The impact of digital racism is profound, as it not only perpetuates stereotypes but also obscures the historical legacy of racial injustices.

One significant harm caused by digital racism is its ability to curtail truth. Misinformation about racial history can lead to a skewed understanding of systemic inequalities that persist today. For instance, false narratives surrounding critical race theory have emerged as a response to efforts aimed at addressing these inequities in educational settings. As noted by scholars, such narratives often serve to protect the status quo by downplaying the realities of systemic racism and its historical roots

Moreover, the digital landscape allows for the rapid dissemination of hate speech and racist ideologies, which can overshadow legitimate discussions about race and justice. Online platforms often struggle to balance freedom of expression with the need to combat hate speech effectively. This creates an environment where harmful content can thrive unchecked, further entrenching racist attitudes in society

The consequences extend beyond individual beliefs; they shape collective memory and influence public policy. When historical truths are obscured or misrepresented online, it hampers efforts toward racial justice and reconciliation. Understanding our past is crucial for addressing present inequalities, yet digital racism complicates this process by fostering ignorance and division.
