Most of us know the story of Moses and the parting of the Red Sea, but familiarity can cause us to miss what it is still saying today. In Exodus 14, both Pharaoh and the Israelites were trapped between regret about the past and anxiety about the future. Moses offered a different path with three simple invitations: do not fear, stand firm, and see. These phrases are not just ancient words of comfort. They are calls to faith, hope, and love in the present moment. Fear distorts our memory and clouds our vision, but God invites us into something better. He is the God who makes a way where there is no way, and He is still doing that today.

Exodus 12 is one of the most powerful passages in all of Scripture, and it is easy to misread it as simply a story of God rescuing His people from an oppressive ruler. But the blood applied to the doorposts was not protection from Pharaoh. It was protection from the judgment of God Himself. The angel of the Lord passed through Egypt bringing judgment, and the only thing that determined who was spared was whether or not they were covered by the blood of the lamb. This was not about ethnic identity, personal righteousness, or even careful religious observance. A mixed multitude of people from many backgrounds left Egypt together, all covered by the same blood. The Israelites were not spared because they were more deserving than the Egyptians. They were spared entirely by grace.

The plagues of Egypt were not random acts of judgment. They were a direct assault on the false gods of Egypt, proving that every idol Egypt trusted was powerless before the Lord. Each plague targeted a specific Egyptian deity, dismantling the spiritual framework of an entire civilization. This same battle plays out in our own hearts today, as we place our ultimate trust in careers, relationships, finances, and reputation rather than in God. Pharaoh heard the word of God repeatedly, saw His power displayed, and still hardened his heart. His story is a mirror for us. The good news is that the door of mercy remains wide open, and the cross of Jesus Christ stands as the ultimate victory over every false god we have ever trusted.
