A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: The Psalmist reminds us, "My times are in Your hands" (Psalm 31:15). On this date in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII corrected the inaccuracies of the Julian calendar (set by Julius Caesar in 45 BC) to correspond more accurately with the seasonal drift over the centuries. As a result, 10 days were "lost" as the dates in October moved from the 4th to the 15th. That reminds us that our times are limited, yet God's time is always the best time. May you use your time wisely as God's gift to you.

A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: In A.D. 451, four hundred and fifty bishops met in Chalcedon in Asia Minor. They assembled in order to settle a controversy over the person of Christ--how could He be both God and man? Throughout the month of October, they deliberated over how to state the biblical truths about Christ being God in the flesh (e.g. John 1:14; Colossians 2:9). Their Definition emphasized four phrases--"without confusion, without change, without division, without separation." Jesus is indeed both and fully God and man "for us and for our salvation." We rejoice in the sincerity and clarity of these theologians who affirmed the truth revealed in Scripture about our Savior, Jesus Christ.
