Not the Bastille
‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’,
Convulsing in commotion,
No food nor fuel—of the future no notion,
Though the hungry hordes the gates of the palace breached,
Too late! Their erstwhile war hero—to safer shores had sneaked,
People’s power indeed,
And if the catchy bluster were to be believed,
From the ashes a glorious new Mother Lanka will be reconceived,
But do not be deceived,
This is not Sri-Lanka’s French Revolution, as some have misperceived,
Or 1776 where King George was unceremoniously forced to leave,
This is a rice and curry revolution—not one of the intellectually aggrieved,
So, when—if—the hunger pangs are relieved,
Back to Third World mundane anarchy at some speed,
Back to daily corruption, infighting and deceit,
And the typical chaos on the street,
For this is the true Third World creed,
So if real change is what we need,
By life-support machine Sri-Lanka mustn’t be reprieved,
For the moribund third-worlder cannot be redeemed,
Far better indeed to declare this failed state deceased.
