  • Ep. 12 Fear, displaced anger, reckless rage, a loaded gun, fighting, unpacking trauma, therapy, comic books, Nerdz and Hip Hop
    Apr 8 2023

In this episode of The Tap In Podcast, Tiawan Pinkney interviews Joshua Brown, the creator of the General Joshua Comic Book, Founder of Nerds and Hip Hop, co-owner of 951Vibes, screenplay writer and former boxer. Tiawan and Joshua journey through the process of Joshua becoming a boxer, dealing with fear and how his fears and frustrations ultimately transformed into reckless rage and emptiness as Joshua's life began to spiral out of control. Be prepared for an in depth journey into a mindset that has evolved from chaos into creativity and the onset of an incredible legacy, but more importantly, what it has taken Joshua to reach his goals thus far.

Tiawan Pinkney has the opportunity to unpack Joshua's past channeling his fears through boxing and channeling his anger into comic books. Joshua's story is one that we can all relate to but it goes beyond that. His story is just a mere intersection of infinite lives on this planet who have sought out different outlets to channel their frustrations and find a way to end the destructive cycle in which they find themselves. By always choosing an outlet rather than allowing one's emotions to become destructive violence leads to the creative rebirth. As life continually unfolds greater truths are revealed to us. Those truths when released from their containers reveal more profound beauty. When you see someone going through their darkest moments and their hardest struggles, that's someone who has the opportunity to become something incredible. Most people are never given the chance to do that.

This is far from any motivational speaker nonsense. Instead, this is an honest look at how fear, rage, trauma and more can be used to propel you forward in ways that most people never even come close to experiencing. Tiawan and Joshua discuss 1) coping mechanisms Joshua Brown used when dealing with his emotions, 2) how he confronted and dealt with his own anger, 3) effects of fear, frustration and rage and 4) his decision to turn his life around by continuing to pursue success.

  • EP.10 Watch What You Say - The Power of Words
    Jan 16 2023

In this episode, Ty Pinkney will be exploring the power of words. Words can harm or heal, and they have the power to influence the world around us. So what are you saying? Are you using your words to build up others or tear them down? Are you using your words to spread a message of love or hate?

Ty will also be talking about the power of positive self-talk and why it's so important to use positive language when you're talking to yourself or others. He also provides a few tips and tricks for making sure your words are always kinder than usual!

You know the old saying: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."

    Well, it's a lie.

What if I told you that a single word could change the course of history?

Well, it's true. It's happened countless times throughout history, from small things like a quote on Instagram that inspires someone to start their own business to huge events like when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (which helped to inspire the Civil Rights Act).

The power of words is something many of us take for granted. We think of them as just tools, but the truth is, words can be used for good or for evil. When you choose your words carefully, you are choosing to use the power of words in a positive way. You're choosing to help people, not hurt them. Your words have the ability to change lives. They can heal and they can harm.

We hope this episode inspires you to think about how you use your words: are they the right ones for the situation? Are they helping other people grow, learn, and improve themselves? Or are they simply making things worse? It's time we all started thinking about the power of our words more often and learning how best to use that power for good.

  • Ep.9 How to Rebound from a Traumatic Injury like a Boss!
    Oct 29 2022

Almost every athlete encounters the perfect storm. What’s that you ask?

First, an injury and second, the process of re-bounding from a traumatic injury. For some, the damage may be so insignificant that they never miss a practice, game or team event. Others may suffer minimal damage, and may only require a day of treatment, three-quarters speed at practice and are lucky enough to be signed off medically to play come game time.

On the other hand, there are times when players suffer injuries that take them out of play for extended periods of time; for a season, even out of play completely. The emotional roller coaster that an athlete endures can be one of the most difficult challenges they’ll ever face.

Sadly, many fail to navigate the process of effectively recovering and getting back onto the field. The Ego has a way of motivating injured athletes to do too much too soon causing them to make matters worse or re-injure themselves. Some athletes find themselves stuck and unable to accept the fact that life as they’ve known it may never be the same. These same athletes also fail to realize that their lives can in fact take a turn for the best, and flourish.

In this episode, Ty shares how he navigated an emotional tsunami after suffering multiple traumatic injuries on the football field, and the internal breakdown he experienced after learning from the doctor that he was destined to lose his right leg. Ty provides intimate details of his experience and the mental warfare he endured, and further lays out a roadmap to help injured athletes express their emotions and overcome their situation to feel motivated, inspired and able to be victorious in their endeavors.

    Relax, listen and takes notes.

You've always exceeded the standard, but now the bar has been raised, the standards are high and things have changed in ways you hadn't foreseen. You're no longer meeting the standards set before you. What's changed? You seek understanding to gain clarity, but it doesn't help. You've worked to hard to be in this position, or to not be seated in a particular position. The internal torment in unbearable. You seek validation, but receive none. Your previous areas of greatness are not so great.

    • It's just a brief slump, or is it?
    • Is it them or is it you?
    • How do you get unstuck?
    • What's the process?
    • Where do you begin?

    Let's dig in...

In this episode, Ty addresses being stuck and getting unstuck. Through story telling, providing examples, targeting counter-productive behaviors and the unhealthy mindset of the stuck athlete or NARP (Non-Athletic Regular Person), Ty forges forward to help listeners to redirect there focus on themselves rather than their situation. There are many reasons that a person can be stuck, but Ty approaches being stuck from his standpoint as a coach, former athlete, athlete-mentor and trainer.
