    Welcome to Pop Culture Pantry!

Join us as we take little deep dives across the decades to uncover the connections between food, history, and pop culture—one cookbook at a time.

This week, Megan and Karen head to Scranton with The Office: The Official Party Planning Guide to Planning Parties and The Ultimate, Ultimate Guide to Throwing a Garden Party. We talk about the American version of The Office, the mockumentary format, its influence on later television, and the office culture of cubicles, conference rooms, birthday parties, potlucks, and break-room food that now feels increasingly nostalgic in the age of remote work.

Then we get into the food and the books themselves: Pretzel Day, Angela’s double-fudge brownies, garden-party finger sandwiches, and one of the strangest and funniest tie-in books in our entire library collection. We also trace the history of pretzels from European baking traditions to Pennsylvania, and the surprisingly complicated history behind brownies!

This week on Patreon, we’re talking about Diwali, The Office episode that introduced many American viewers to the Festival of Lights, and the food traditions including Megan’s favorite Indian dessert, Gulab Jamun! And we have a recipe for THE BEST BROWNIES YOU’LL EVER EAT!

  • 04 Harry Potter: Butterbeer, Mincemeat Pies & Wizarding World Food
    Sep 17 2026

    Welcome to Pop Culture Pantry!

Join us as we take little deep dives across the decades to uncover the connections between food, history, and pop culture—one cookbook at a time.

This week, Megan and Karen are headed to Hogwarts with Harry Potter: Feasts & Festivities and The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook. We look at the cookbooks, but we also dig into the phenomenon behind them: why the Harry Potter books became so enormously popular and why they continue to endure.

We talk about the way the writing grows up alongside Harry, the series’ intricate structure, its world-building and hero’s journey, and how the books helped create a generation of readers—and a fan culture built around midnight book releases, theories, fan fiction, and a world people still want to return to.

And because this is Pop Culture Pantry, there’s food too: Butterbeer, mincemeat pies, and the elaborate, delectable Patronus Cake.

This week on Patreon, we’re talking about Pumpkin Pasties—and the very real food history behind them. We dig into the centuries-old Cornish pasty and provide THE DEFINITIVE recipe for Butterbeer.
