  • Episode 016 - The New Dietary Guidelines: Context Over Controversy (Part 1) | The Well-ISH Podcast
    Feb 2 2026

In this episode of The Well-ISH Podcast, Derek MPP, RDN, CPT and Anthony MFN, RDN sit down for a much-needed conversation — to break down the newly released Dietary Guidelines and what they really mean.

Rather than focusing on headlines or social media controversy, this episode zooms out to revisit the foundations of nutrition. Together, they walk through what’s actually changed, what hasn’t, and where nuance and context matter most. From protein recommendations and personalized calorie needs to fats, fiber, fruits, vegetables, and the limits of one-size-fits-all guidance, this conversation is about clarity—not extremes.

They also discuss the role these guidelines play in public health, why misinterpretation happens so easily, and how individuals should think about using them (and when not to). Most importantly, this episode reinforces a core Well-ISH principle: guidelines are a starting point, not a prescription.

This is Part 1 of a two-part conversation, with more discussion on whole grains, processed foods, and practical application coming soon.

If you’ve felt confused, frustrated, or overwhelmed by the latest nutrition headlines—this episode is for you.

  • Episode 015 - “I Need to Change” — How One Decision Led to So Much More | The Well-ISH Podcast
    Jan 26 2026

Dakota VanHauen, HR Professional at Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics, joins The Well-ISH Podcast to discuss what it really takes to prepare for a bodybuilding show—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Dakota opens up about making a major shift during a low point, finding renewed direction through training, and committing to the structure required for competition prep. We talk about the realities behind the stage: long cardio sessions, progressive nutrition changes, body image challenges, the post-competition rebound, and why a coach (and community) matters even when you “already know how to work out.”

If you’ve ever struggled with motivation, consistency, or feeling stuck in your health, this is a practical and honest conversation about taking the next step—without pretending it’s easy.

  • Episode 013 - 2025 Year in Review | The Well-ISH Podcast
    Dec 29 2025

When we launched the Well-ISH Podcast, the goal was simple: talk about health and wellness as it exists in real life. Not perfection. Not extremes. Just honest conversations about how people actually feel, what they struggle with, and how small, sustainable choices add up over time.

In this final episode of 2025, we look back on the moments, voices, and themes that defined our journey — from patient stories and provider insights to conversations about healthcare, weight management, mental health, nutrition, movement, and what it really means to feel well.

Again and again, one truth kept showing up: wellness isn’t a finish line. It’s a daily practice. A system built on small habits, long-term thinking, compassion, and support.

This episode is a reflection on where we started, how far we’ve come, and why we feel these conversations are important. We’re also deeply grateful to Iowa Specialty Hospital for supporting this podcast and for the work they do to serve our communities every day. We’re excited to keep amplifying ISH services, spotlighting local experts, and sharing practical health and wellness conversations across the Des Moines area in 2026.

Thank you for listening, learning, and growing with us this year. We’re excited for what’s next.
