Crisis seems to follow crisis. Inequality is rising, growth is stagnant, the environment is suffering, and the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed every crack in the system. We hear more calls for radical change, even the overthrow of capitalism. But the answer to our problems is not revolution. The answer is to create a better capitalism by understanding and harnessing the power of creative destruction - innovation that disrupts, but that over the past 200 years has also lifted societies to previously unimagined prosperity.

In 1992, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt published "A Model of Growth through Creative Destruction". To honor the 30th anniversary of this publication, Ufuk Akcigit and John Van Reenen organized a four-day zoom seminar, followed-up by a book edited at Harvard University Press on "The Economics of Creative Destruction". More than a hundred renowned economists met from June 9 to June 12 2021 to present and exchange ideas about how the creative destruction framework offers a fresh lens to think about the economy. The excitingly phenomenal era in which we live has been called The Golden Age. It’s an apt description. During our lives more changes have occurred, more progress has been made than during any previous millennium in the development of man. It would be almost impossible to select the most important discovery in recent years, what would you choose? Why Gen Xers - waiting for Boomers to retire--have made the choices they have, and how their creativity can save us from economic ruin. Generation X grew up in the greed-is-good 1980s, before the Great Middle-Class Squeeze and the roller coaster of economic insecurity and tech revolution began driving Xers' cultural trends, lifestyle choices, and sociological circumstances.
