In "Praise of Folly", also translated as "The Praise of Folly", is an essay written in Latin in 1509 by Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam and first printed in June 1511. Inspired by previous works of the Italian humanist Faustino Perisauli De Triumpho Stultitiae, it is a satirical attack on superstitions, other traditions of European society and on the Western Church. Erasmus revised and extended his work, which was originally written in the space of a week while sojourning with Sir Thomas More at More's house in Bucklersbury in the City of London.

Eine hundert Seiten lange Rede. Die Narrheit in Person hält über sich und den Rest der Welt einen Vortrag. Dieses Werk aus dem Jahre 1509, begründet eine Union der Narren und Dummies. Erasmus' Sprachspiele, seine Späße, die Seitenhiebe auf die Zeitgenossen sind zeitlos gut.

Fürwahr, dem Namen nach ist Erasmus weithin bekannt. Doch wer weiß schon, wie viele bedeutende Werke dieser berühmte Gelehrte aus Rotterdam verfasst hat? Wer hat sie je ganz, wer wenigstens teilweise gelesen? Das Lob der Narrheit, seine berühmte Redeübung, die zuerst anno 1511 in Paris gedruckt wurde, ist mittlerweile fünfhundert Jahre hindurch sowohl lateinisch wie auch in anderen Sprachen immer wieder neu aufgelegt worden, fehlte nie in den Buchhandlungen.

Una sagace satira della chiesa cattolica del 16esimo secolo, narrata dal punto di vista della Follia stessa. Zeppo di umorismo pungente e di allusioni classiche, "L'elogio della follia" è una parodia che ha riscosso enorme successo già ai tempi di Erasmo stesso e ha inaspettatamente spianato la strada per gli inizi della riforma protestante. Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus (circa 1466-1536) è stato uno studioso umanista olandese. Figura di spicco del Rinascimento nordeuropeo, è stato il primo editore del Nuovo Testamento e ha scritto opere significative.

'The Praise of Folly', written in Latin in 1509 and spoken by the goddess Folly (who champions a lively enjoyment of life), was a bold satire on (in the cautious contemporary environment) not only Western classical traditions but also the Catholic Church. Dedicated to More himself, Erasmus wittily challenged entrenched views in so forthright (and humanist) a style that it could have brought him in direct conflict with the papacy. Fortunately the pope, Leo X, enjoyed the humour and the challenge!
