"A coppertop steam engine has disappeared," explains a train boiler inspector as he visits Sherlock Holmes at 221B, "and not by the whim of drunken youths." Something sinister is afoot, and Holmes learns as he takes on the mystery that criminals have designs upon using the locomotive for purposes never imagined by its designers.

As in "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge", Ambrose Bierce speculates on a person's final thoughts at the moment of death. An instant becomes a 30-minute short story. Bierce was an infantry officer in the Civil War and witnessed the deaths of many and no doubt contemplated his own; thus the fatalistic basis of much of his writing.

Ambrose Bierce, a veteran of the Civil War and writer of note, had a fascination with death and PTSD as a result of his war experience. "One of the Missing" follows Private Jerome Searing, an Army scout, as he goes behind enemy lines. In today's military, Searing would probably be in the Navy Seals or Army Special Forces. He was good at his job, and his job was soldiering.

An eccentric boarding house denizen winds up dead; his presumed killer, a fellow boarder, has vanished. The baffling case unfolds through the testimony of witnesses, who are themselves suspect.

A moving story about an observer sent to enemy lines in the Civil War, who moves too far forward and find himself caught in the vise of war. As in so many of his classic tales of the destructive nature of war, in "One of the Missing" Bierce paints an unflinching portrait of the damages solidiering can inflict upon a man - both physically and emotionally.

"The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter", one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 13 stories in the cycle collected as "The Return of Sherlock Holmes". It was originally published in The Strand Magazine in 1904 with illustrations by Sidney Paget.
