Storytellers and poets down the centuries have returned repeatedly to the universal themes of the Quest of the Holy Grail and the love between Sir Launcelot and Queen Guenever. Yet the first printed account, written by the 15th century knight Sir Thomas Malory, remains unmatched.

This monumental work made the Arthurian cycle available for the first time in English. Malory took a body of legends from Celtic folklore that had been adapted into French literature, gave them an English perspective, and produced a work which ever since has had tremendous influence upon literature.

Da quell'esperienza estrema, fatta di dolore e sopravvivenza, nacque Memorie da una casa di morti (1861), uno dei suoi romanzi più potenti e sconvolgenti. Attraverso lo sguardo di un detenuto nobile, Aleksandr Petrovič, l'autore racconta la vita quotidiana in una colonia penale della Siberia zarista: il duro lavoro, la fame, la violenza, ma anche l'umanità sorprendente dei condannati, con le loro storie, le loro colpe e la loro disperata speranza di redenzione.

Ricordi della casa dei morti fu scritto al termine della pena scontata da Dostoevskij in Siberia, dopo il 1859, e fu pubblicato tra il 1861 e il 1862. Infatti nel 1849 l’autore venne arrestato per partecipazione a società segreta con scopi sovversivi e condannato a morte, ma lo zar Nicola commutò questa condanna in lavori forzati a tempo indeterminato. Nel 1850 venne quindi deportato in Siberia, nella fortezza di Omsk. Nel febbraio del 1854 venne liberato per buona condotta, scontando il resto della stessa servendo nell'esercito come soldato semplice.

Nelle sue opere il bene e il male si contrappongono violentemente, colpi di scena e commenti morali da parte della scrittrice fanno accettare lo stile un po' approssimato e a volte non del tutto corretto.
