African American literature is the body of literature produced in the United States by writers of African descent. It begins with the works of such late 18th-century writers as Phillis Wheatley. Before the high point of enslaved people narratives, African-American literature was dominated by autobiographical spiritual narratives. The genre known as slave narratives in the 19th century were accounts by people who had generally escaped from slavery, about their journeys to freedom and ways they claimed their lives.

The first part of Johnson's work deals with his life as a slave in Virginia. At the end of the Civil War in 1865, he gained his freedom and left Virginia for New York, and eventually Africa. The main theme of the book revolves around his missionary effort on the African continent.

"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" began as a story told by Englishman Charles Lutwidge Dodgson to three children in a boat, one of which was called Alice and enjoyed it so much she asked him to write it down for her. He did so, under the pseudonym of Lewis Carroll. He was thus releasing a striking tale of fantasy, games with logic, and a wildly original play on narrative structure. Today, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" is the sixth best-selling single-volume book of all time.
