Two Friends is a short story by the French author Guy de Maupassant, published in 1883. The story is set in Paris in January 1871, during the Franco-Prussian War, when the city lay under siege.

"Rappaccini's Daughter" is a Gothic short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne first published in the December 1844. It is about Giacomo Rappaccini, a medical researcher in Padua, Italy, who grows a garden of poisonous plants. He brings up his daughter to tend the plants, and she becomes resistant to the poisons, but in the process she herself becomes poisonous to others.

Owen Wister (July 14, 1860-July 21, 1938) was an American writer and historian, considered the "father" of western fiction. He is best remembered for writing a biography of Ulysses S. Grant and the novel The Virginian, in which Wister created the archetypal cowboy.

Thomas Hood (May 23, 1799-May 3, 1845) was an English poet, author and humorist. Hood wrote regularly for the magazines, The London Magazine, Athenaeum, and Punch. He later published a magazine largely consisting of his own works. Hood, never robust, lapsed into invalidism by the age of 41, and died at the age of 45. In this rare 1924 recording, James Joyce reads from the Aeolus episode of his masterpiece, Ulysses. The recording was arranged and financed by the author’s friend and publisher Sylvia Beach, who brought him by taxi to the HMV (His Master’s Voice) gramophone studio in the Paris suburb of Billancourt. Frederick Cornell (May 6, 1867 - March 6, 1921) was an English soldier, geologist, prospector and author born in Devon, England, and educated at the Bedford School. In 1902, he moved to South Africa and served at Lieutenant with the South African Native Labour Corps during World War I. His short stories, considered to be among South Africa's finest, include this tale from his surreal experiences living among the bushmen.

"Brooksmith," a short story written by Henry James in 1891, tells the tale of Brooksmith, a retired diplomat's butler the 'narrator' had once known. Brooksmith was responsible for the preservation of the atmosphere the diplomat's salon where the guests enjoyed a high level of intellectual conversation. Brooksmith was regarded by the narrator as "the artist" who insured that the company at each gathering was the optimum number and mix of personalities to provide the highest level of conversation possible.

Rodrigues Ottolengui was an American writer and pioneering dentist born in Charleston, SC, who lived most of his life in New York City. Ottolengui was one of the first dentists to use X-rays and was a specialist in orthodontics and root canal therapy. In the 1890s, Ottolengui published four novels and a collection of detective short stories.

After spending the summer of 1853 in the Berkshire Mountains, where he supposedly had a real life encounter with a lightning-rod salesman, Melville published "The Lightning-Rod Man". At the end of this short story, the lightning-rod salesman is exposed for the fraud that he is. However, that will not keep his successors from fanning out to the Middle West, where lightning storms abound and farmers are gullible.

American author Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" was written in April of 1894 and originally published in Vogue in December of that year. The title refers to the time elapsed between the moments at which the protagonist, Louise Mallard, hears that her husband is dead, then discovers that he is alive after all.
