An author of poetry, translations, fiction, theatre, art criticism, and film narration, Ferlinghetti was best known for his second collection of poems, A Coney Island of the Mind (1958), which has been translated into nine languages and sold over a million copies. William Morris Meredith Jr. (January 9, 1919-May 30, 2007), born in New York City, was an American poet and educator. He was Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1978 to 1980, and the recipient of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. John Anthony Ciardi (June 24, 1916-March 30, 1986) was an American poet, translator, and etymologist. While primarily known as a poet, Ciardi pursued etymology, contributed to the Saturday Review as a columnist and long-time poetry editor, directed the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in Vermont, and recorded commentaries for National Public Radio. "Cannibalism In The Cars" is a short story by Mark Twain that satirizes the political system of the US. The story is about a group of men trapped in a train during a snow storm. After a week, the men know they must resort to cannibalism for survival. They hold ineffective elections, and are so formal that they even follow parliamentary procedure.
